Just that really. One of my twins appears to have a bizarre ability in maths which seems to come from nowhere. He is 4.

This is another theory that combines Intellect, Creativity and Task Commitment to equal Giftedness. Therefore, high IQ in itself would not meet the cut:

I like that article, ds's gifts only show when he feels like it/is motivated so the qualification of only at certain times in certain circumstances rings true to me. His strength is in creativity (original and often lateral thinking) but his abilities are very uneven, dyslexia runs very strongly in our family and some of my cousins have argued that it's the different wiring that gives them both their difficulties and their gifts.

Like others have said here we've also wondered a bit about his future trajectory, he seems to have an odd mix of very moral and completely immoral viewpoints. dh thinks he's either going to save the world or end up in jail! I suspect that's slightly extreme :)

DS is also dyslexic and I agree with your cousins.

I didn't, but I have now. It was really interesting and made a lot of sense.

Thinking of my children dd has 'Schoolhouse Giftedness' She is currently stressing that she might not get an award for getting over 90% in her classes this term (she got this last term), and that in one class she has dropped from 100 to 97%, even though last term she took most of her favourite subjects and this term she is struggling a bit with PE. I tell her that most people aren't good at everything, but she still feels huge pressure to succeed. She would enjoy accelerated teaching, and at her non streaming comprehensive often feels irritated at the slow pace.

ds is much more 'Creative-Productive Giftedness' he is a total knowledge sponge and very verbally able and a great debater (which is why we picked up on the dyslexia, in infants he could discuss secondary school science concepts but struggle to write at an age appropriate level). He really enjoys figuring things out and the stretch stuff he has been involved with has featured deductive and creative activities. He is happy with uncertainty, not bothered about getting things wrong, and not very marks orientated. dd on the other hand feels much more of a need to get the 'right' answer and is validated by her grades.
