Gifted and talented confidentiality?!

Do you think it is out of order that the teacher with responsibility for agt register sends out emails cc'ing all the children on the register with things like quizzes so that all the children and their parents can see who is on the able gifted and talented programme?! I can't understand why he doesn't bcc everyone?!

My school's email system won't allow for blind copies.

PiqueABoo · 16/01/2014 20:07

Not really. If I want to know things like that I simply ask my child.

Not if in different yrs, BeerTP.
Ho hum. I don't care for this modern confidentiality age. So no big deal to me.

Jinglebells99 · 16/01/2014 20:41

It's every child on the agt register in the whole secondary school listed alphabetically by first name.

G&T list is supposed to be going isn't it?
May be irrelevant, but shows how important it is if its to be scrapped.
My dd left school at the end of y3, the day she left they told me she was on the list. They hadn't even been bothered to tell us Grin

The agt coordinator is setting weekly quizzes and competitions that only agt students can enter. The competitions are not really only appropriate for agt students, things like photography competitions. The quizzes are things like cryptic quizzes, dingbats, sudoku.

My understanding is the data protection act 1998 prohibits them from sharing your personal data in this way without your consent. So not just out of order, but illegal.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 17/01/2014 07:18

If the other parents' email addresses are visible to you, then that is a problem in itself.

inappropriatelyemployed · 18/01/2014 21:59

Yes. As a lawyer, I agree this is a breach of the DPA.

Joyn · 19/01/2014 11:05

If you ignore the data protection issue, (which you shouldn't - I think they should have got permission to set up this group). I actually like the idea of everyone knowing who is in that group. It might give the kids a chance to get to know people like them. Create a group identity, a feeling of belonging. It can be lonely feeling like the only 1 on your wave length. I suspect/hope that's why the teacher does it that way.
