Question for teachers concerning ks1 level 3 test.

I know the level 3 test at the end of year 2 is simply a pass/fail, but could it be used to indicate sub levels within level 3. For instance, if a child scored 25 out of 30 would that sugest the child were 3b or possibly 3a?

It might 'suggest' it, but it would not be a definitive assessment.

The tests are not a pass/fail. They are an indication of the child's level in reading.

The reported level at the end of the year will be based on the teacher's assessments of reading (probably based on APP criteria), and the test result will be used as supporting evidence.

The school will track progress using sublevels (or average point scores), although these will probably not be reported to parents at the end of Y2.

Thank you for replying. I thought there was a score where they passed or not. I sill find the level and sub level system confusing. Especially when sometimes the sub level is given and sometimes not.

It's not a pass / fail test. Yes, there is a threshold score for 'achieving level 3' but it's not seen as a 'pass' iykwim. If I remember rightly, the threshold score is 16. A child is no longer given an overall end of year level based on the test score.

A high test score could be used to support a teacher assessment of 3a or 3b. However, it would also possible to override the score and assess at 3c, depending on the child's day-to-day performance in class.
