My daughter has been totally adment that shes NOT going to go to her current schools 6th form...regardless of its outstanding ofsted and very high pass rate and consistancey with teachers ....
She wants us to look at other 6th forms, which ofcourse, we will...
I think she may to her, feel "fed up" of the school itself and to her, requires a fresh place to study.. barr having to do another year(yr11) ,another 2 years on top of that is an awful concept and depressing.
Is there any remote chance of some advice to guide me how to maybe get her to see past how she feels about being so anti bout her schools 6th form and how i can make her see the potenial of staying on at this one.......or at least giving it some thought?
Or should i resign to the fact that shes made her mind up?....
its bothering me intently

What does it look like in your area- are there any Sixth Form colleges she could go straight into after doing Yr 11 at the school she is at?

mummytime · 28/06/2012 09:39

Go and have a good look around at all the options, including her own sixth form. After each one draw up a list of pros and cons, include things such as: subjects, enrichment options, commute, pastoral care, sports, positions of responsibility etc.
Some students are quite ready for a more adult setting. Around here lots of pupils move from DCs Outstanding school to a local Outstanding sixth form college, others move from other state and Private schools into DCs school, a few also move out of State into private (sometimes on scholarships). It really does depend on the "fit" between school and pupil.

But do get her to look objectively at sixth form in the same school can be a very different experience from the previous 5 years.

Look at all the options available (including the current one) - it's possible that there will be some practical factor which will make her see the current one is actually the best option, eg availability of some course combination.

But overall the "best" place for her will be the one she wants to be at, regardless of other factors, as it will make her feel it is her choice and she'll feel committed to what she is doing, whereas any prerssure from you to stay at her current one will feel like this is your choice not hers and will magnify even any mionr niggles she has into "it's not fair".

So be cautious, and try to give the impression you really want to view them all as equally possible options, whatver your actual preference.

ooo "mummytime"...and "cory".... thank you for replying!
i will be takin all that on board and be using all the platforms you have mentioned to evaluate from each 6th form... Shes all for post secondary studying ... i think i do worry to much !... but its also in her intrest to take onboard all avenues and pros and cons , as you said..
im blessed with a creative and very bright soul , who i feel will carve out a good future for her self... but getting the GSCES phase right, A Levels and Uni right.. is daunting

its creeped upon us sooner than i expected... (woe is me) !
Ive looked at 6th forms this morning ,online etc and pending open days/evenings too.. then got into a sink with it all and found myself.. on Mumsnet

Watch this space.....as they say ....... :/ lol

My DS is on his sixth form induction day today, it is very scarey. He only applied to one place, but that does suit him.

youmustbejoking43c · 28/06/2012 10:08

your very right :) " muminscotland"... last night was difficult! as this is what has snowballed it all and ive ended up on mumsnet!.. lol
It is about what she will feel happyer with and thus be more productive in her 6th form education, hopefully!
Watch this space..... Thanks

Hmmm. I went to my local sixth form college and got really good grades, if I had been made to stay at school I would have told the teachers to f* off and rebelled. I had been a model pupil at school but by Year 11 I was biting my lip a lot and felt suffocated by it all. It was time to move on. She needs to go where she is happy.

youmustbejoking43c · 28/06/2012 10:35

your right... i think she feels like this... even tho shes not been so forthright in that tone lol. but i can tell... she wont be a happy bunny..
tricky tryin to get a good balance of what she wants and needs ... mixed with all the best info we can pack the raffters with! Grin

We mainly have colleges around our way as only the private schools (and I think the faith schools) do a Sixth Form at all. In some ways I think it works quite well; it is that little bit closer to adulthood for many of them.

My dd is also in Yr 10, but has been ill most of the year, so may well be looking at doing some of her GCSEs at college, as well as her A-levels.

youmustbejoking43c · 28/06/2012 11:50

"cory" we shall get there in the end :)...
thank you all so far for contributing to my concern Thanks
my time/day on here too Brew

I ccqn honestly say the years I spent in VI forn were the worst of my life. I still have not forgiven my mother for forcing me to go there, it was a complete waste. I hated the place, couldn't do the subjects I wanted, felt as though I was being treated like a 12 year old ......................

Have a look at the options, and do it together. I'm a big advocate of college as a stepping stone to uni.

As others have said it is about what is right for her, and where she will be happy.

morethanpotatoprints · 05/07/2012 19:08

I agree with sashh, but would go one further. Having 2 dcs one at uni the other 6th form, I had absolutely no input at all into where they went or what they did. They are both independant young people now able to make their own decisions in life. It is not your choice and none of your business. I don't mean to be harsh but time to let go!
