What age are your DCs?

And are you hoping to rent or buy? And, sorry to ask, but what is your budget for that? Also, which part/s of London does DH need to reach for work? And have you any idea how long a commute he could countenance?

stupidgirlNo1 · 28/05/2012 12:41

MY DC is 5 in YR.DH has office in Holborn. No idea about the budget, only knows that I need a max of 3 bedroom.Looking for rent to start with.Commuting should not be a problem, anyway we don't drive.

When you say commuting not a problem do you mean an hour or more. How many changes (eg tube train).

stupidgirlNo1 · 29/05/2012 11:31

DH says upto a hour should not be a problem.when I looked for houses outside border, travel seems to be expensive.I am not sure how things going to go.House, school, looks like a nightmare.

I'm tempted to say start with the school! Grin (and a tube map)

It may seem daunting but once you get settled, London is a great place to live. But do pick your area carefully. Renting to begin with is a good idea.

I was wondering if north London might be best for you (easier to escape back up to the NE, straightforward to get in to Holborn). It's not the part of London I know, though, so can't suggest schools or specific areas: but you might like to think about Hampstead, Highgate, Muswell Hill, Primrose Hill, Maida Vale or Alexandra Palace.

Primary school admissions are mental in some parts of London. Proximity to good schools is usually reflected strongly in local property values.

You can get an idea of property prices for different areas from websites like this

www.londonpropertywatch.co.uk/avg_prices.html

or this

www.zoopla.co.uk/heatmaps/

Before renting a house, check distance to the local school! If you are further away than 150m/200m (worst case) then you could be outside the catchment area.
