Outstanding verbal comprehension

Hello, I'm not sure if I should post on here or not but my Ds(6yrs 11mths) recently had a full cognitive assessment with EP due to school believing he has ASD...she has since contacted me with some results but what she was actually speechless about was his verbal comprehension/reasoning skills (not sure if I have wrote this correctly as I was jotting while she spoke to me over the phone and my bloody pen decided to start running out...typical!) and said it was "outstanding" for a boy of his age and also he would make a very successful scientist or engineer. Unfortunatly when I asked for a copy of Ds results she said she did not tend to do this as it takes more time.....so I was just wondering if any of you lovely MNers have ever been told similar about your Dc?

At the mo I am v confused and everytime I google those exact words I get a load of websites involving giftedness??? The problem is EP said he is more than capable to complete work at school but we need to motivate him(as he is 2 yrs behind in regards to his reading/writing) and I do not have a clue as to how I can actively do this unless I sit in class with him...any ideas anyone?

Contact the NAGC (UK)! Yes, that sounds like gifted reasoning ability - but there's obviously something else going on as well if he's two years behind with reading and writing. It is possible to be gifted (i.e. have a high IQ) and have a learning disability such as dyslexia or dyspraxia as well. It is also very common for giftedness (especially frustrated, undiagnosed giftedness) to LOOK like ASD (my DD went through something similar). You need to research everything you get told, and you need support and advice.

And please don't accept the EP saying they can't give you a report - that is absolutely ludicrous! Use the Freedom of Information Act to get the written results if necessary. Or the person who wrote the referral to the EP.

Good luck!

Sorry- she said she couldn't give you a report? Who paid for the test?

propercheesed · 21/05/2012 23:06

Wow thanks for quick replies! I have been on NAGC thanks eyeof but I'm kind of "headuparse" at the moment all sorts has been mentioned including Aspergers but without seeing it on paper I kind of feel like i'm just making something out of nothing...if that makes any sense?

Hi seeker it was the EP which the school finally brought in this January after they told me he was showing signs of ASD(2 YRS ago!), Headmaster said Aspergers(12 months ago!) and I kicked up a stink in December after requesting the paper work they had on Ds to get him referred to CAMHS and found out they were not actually doing anything to help him but treat him like a bad un who is from a deprived area therefore has been dragged up, which he certainly is not!....oops sorry that turned into a rant Blush

Gosh, I could have almost written your post! Look up twice exceptional on Google. Given your son's test results, he actually should be several years ahead in his reading rather than two years behind. My son was suspected of having Aspergers as well but it turned out to be dyslexia. I would definitely try and get a copy of the report, surely they could photocopy it for you.

seeker · 22/05/2012 07:28

So there are behavioural issues that the school is concerned about? did the EP say anything about them?

I would go to the school today and ask for a copy of the report. You really can't do anything until you have seen it. There has to be a reason why he is two years behind in reading with excellent verbal comprehension. Dyslexia?

propercheesed · 22/05/2012 09:54

Oh we have had quite a bit going on...which I must say before hand does not happen at home!...pushing and kicking teachers, lashing out and scratching other pupils, disrupting class with his bad behaviour, constantly arguing back with staff, point blank refusing to do his work infact they allowed him to sit and stare at the same 2 lines of work for 2 WHOLE DAYS! unfortunatly I did not find out about this until the school had started doing something to help him and here we were concerned because he was coming home and being verbally aggressive towards his 2 yr sister(not swearing but just wouldn't let her speak or come anywhere near him..v upsetting for everyone he is very protective of his sister any other time), plus night terrors...nightmares, got very close to school refusal.

Seeker its a very confusing one about the dyslexia because some days he will read fluent then others he struggles with the same words, he produces good homework..granted the minimum he can get away with but still neat. He has actually produced work of a good standard at school but something happened and he just stopped last september! he was refusing to work and then sitting in at breaktimes..because he wanted too?? v unlike my son he loves to be outside. The EP also flagged up below average for emotional literacy so after reading a bit of info I thought maybe it was the breaktimes that were bothering him?? I'm so confused they say he has no empathy yet he cries if someone hurts themselves esp his sister, he gets cross with others because they are nasty to a boy he likes(who talks about interesting things...nobody else does) unfortunatly this boy is constantly off poorly.

We have another meeting with camhs at the end of this month and due to our main concerns being his behaviour at school they are in contact with the EP so whether the info will be passed onto them and then explained in more detail I'm not sure.

I would love to start from the beginning and tell you everything but unfortunatly it would be a lot longer than this :)

Oh forgot to mention the EP did not see any of the things outlined on the questionnaires both myself and the school filled in for her before she came to observe him....he spent 2 hrs doing tests with her and when she asked if he wanted a break he said no he wanted to carry on!...yep even more confusing but she did point out she had built up excellent repoire with him.

You could also check out the Misdiagnosis of Gifted Children book:

books.google.co.uk/books/about/Misdiagnosis_And_Dual_Diagnoses_Of_Gifte.html?id=NQrtt-peg5AC&redir_esc=y

Some of it can be read on line.

One possibility is that your son is not getting challenged enough. The CP that saw my son said that he "clearly relished intellectual challenge" yet because of his dyslexic problems, he had been placed on the bottom table. This could be similar to your son enjoying the challenges set by your EP.

Have you had his eyes tested?

propercheesed · 22/05/2012 14:56

Hi niceweather, Thanks for the links will take a look later. I'm guessing that may be the problem(being on the bottom table) because a few months ago he came home and told me what other children were doing on another table(during maths) and he wanted to do that because he was doing the boring stuff...but back then according to the school he was working below the national curriculum levels for everything so I just told him he would eventually get to that work because he has to work his way up.

He has also told me sometimes the work is hard, sometimes its easy, and sometimes he has done it before so he doesn't want to do it again Hmm but after googling it came to my attention that "hard" could mean something completely different to him?? anyways new strategies are on hold until after the summer hols when he gets a new teacher and they are concerntrating on a more sensitive form of teaching at the moment to try and build up his self esteem...which has been totally trashed over the past couple of years :(

Oh and yes his eyes were tested in dec 2010 and then he spent the nxt 12 months having patch therapy.
