Should I 'warn' school about DS?

My eldest is starting Reception in September. Now, with all the usual disclaimers (too early to tell, they progress at different rates) I nevertheless think he's very bright. He reads fluently (to the level of something like an Enid Blyton, I guess), and also loves numbers (addition, subtraction, basic multiplication) and puzzles (sudokus, crosswords) and general 'stuff' (dinosaur facts, science experiments, capital cities etc). Anyway, my question is, should I talk to the class teacher before he starts, or just leave her to find out for herself? I don't want to come across as a pushy parent, but I do want to make sure that the transition is as smooth as possible (DS is also a pretty sensitive little chap). Does anyone have any helpful experiences to share?

Good that he is on SA+. My son got taken off the SEN register and still off it. His reading is above average but according to Dyslexia Research Institute, it's 7 years behind intellect. He makes subtle reading errors but his comprehension is very good. Your son is definitely at risk of getting taken off the register if he compensates so well but my son is off the register and has still had help so it might not matter too much. My son is the same verbally - very articulate. His spelling is horrendous! Have you googled "Stealth Dyslexia"?

Yes, I think that's what it is x The dx we have is just of "SpLD in writing, spelling and fine motor control", so doesn't mention the d-word, but that's what I tell people it is as it's more understandable.

I don't think that stealth dyslexia and 2E are commonly used terms. The SENCO at secondary hadn't heard of 2E but she and the other teachers do understand that you can be intelligent AND have poor literacy skills. They readily agreed to him using a laptop despite him not being too far behind - I think they recognise the discrepancy. The CP we saw said that he had Oxbridge potential but his attainment at school is distinctly average.... and students who are average are not likely to be highlighted as needing intervention. At least I think he is beginning to take off in a few areas now and hopefully the laptop will help but it's still early days.
