Sorry if this has been discussed to death-but I've only just visited this board for the 1st time.
Does everyone who suspects their child of being gifted submit them for Mensa tests? I should think that it's a great & very supportive organization for gifted children.

Mensa will only test on children over the age of 10, we joined mensa and nagc when our dd was tested using a private ed psych that was recommended to me on here.
I have to say NAGC have been fantastic especially the phone consultation service,i'm not sure we will renew our mensa membership as i think its more an adult orientated organisation and i hate to say it but maybe a bit of a status thing >>> disclaimer;we joined as we thought it may have been able to provide support

"Mensa considers 'gifted' children to be in the top 2% of the population in terms of their non-verbal IQ."

I wonder why it is only non-verbal IQ?

I joined Mensa as an adult and found it very disappointing. Full of people you'd cross the road to avoid in any other circumstances and a lot of them very up themselves. No support whatsoever - just a glorified social club.

I would also say the NAGC is a much better organisation for families to join. :)

Thanks for the feedback....Out of interest, are the entry requirements the same for both?

NAGC has no entry requirements. If you believe your child to be of high learning potential then join - www.nagcbritain.org.uk/

They offer a lot of support through the helpline and there are some great fact sheets - these are free to members and some are chargeable to non-members. They also offer workshops in various different parts of the country. We went to the big family weekend in Leicester last year and both thoroughly enjoyed it. If nothing else it was an opportunity to meet like-minded families, and we both made new friends which was a bonus.

Thanks, that is interesting...
