Kilve court residential

My dd has been put forward for a 4 night creative writing residential at Kilve Court. She is y7, 12 yrs old and it would be for five days. I don't know whether to let her go as I know nothing about the centre, she would be going without friends and she has never stayed away from home that long. She is not very worldly wise and totally disorganized. I would be grateful to hear of any experiences of Kilve Court. Thanks.

it all looks v well organised according to the website, and as they cater for y3 up, they are probably well used to kids who haven't spent a long period away from home.

why don't you just call them and get your fears laid to rest? it looks like a great way of building her confidence Grin

does she want to go?

i would also speculate they see a fair amount of kids who are bright but might struggle with 'real world' organisation. Grin it's kind of their remit. Grin it will be brilliant for her.

My son went when he was in y5. He hated it. He's very clever, but in no way is he arrogant with it. Unfortunately the other g&t children there were extremely competitive and arrogant. This seemed to be encouraged by the staff there too.

Oh my word that brings back memories! I went on a history one when I was 12 in 1992! I liked it but it probably really depends on the people running the course and whether you click with the other children. We had great midnight feasts, I seem to remember...

FWIW 'not very wordly wise and totally disorganised' is an exact description of me at 12. I was fine!

My son went on one of these when he was in Y4 - it was really good and he's been nagging me to go back ever since. Some of the children were a little precious and I think their attendance had been brought about more by parental pressure than school recommendation as a few didn't seem to particularly cope with the course. But for a genuinely able child, the one we've experienced was great, and I've heard lots of good things about others too.

My DD is yr5 and has been 3 times. Twice were for the weekend (yr3 and yr4) and once was for 5 days (yr4).
She loves it and would go all the time if we could afford it.

Thanks so much everyone. I managed to talk to a teacher at school who's daughter went last year. My dd is so excited that I have decided to dress her from primark as she will lose everything and let her go. Really appreciate all of your experiences!Grin

Wow, I went to Kilve Court a few times, back in the day :o I did do a creative writing course there, in Y7 too. It was fab! Our task was to write a newspaper, so we looked at different styles of reporting, then they took us on a trip to Bath where we met Danny LaRue (ahem, showing my age perhaps...) who was rehearsing for a panto at the theatre. When we got back we had to produce various reports about what we'd seen and turn it into a newspaper.

I can remember precisely nothing about the food/accommodation/organisation. It was (must have been) fine. She'll be fine, it'll probably be good for her and she just might surprise you.

Things might have changed, mind, this would have been in 1987 or thereabouts :o

I wonder who is the 2012 equivalent of Danny La Rue???!!
