last week I asked for harder words to read... one (or more) groups have been given spellings!

I also asked for more challenging books as the yellow band books were a "little easy." given that we are reading easy chapter books at home they have put her up one band. I am shocked as we normally play a little game every couple of months where I say the books arer too easy and they ignore me and we carry on doing our own thing in our own happy way. once pmt has passed Grin

ok so she could spell the words first time at home and green band is not a big leap, but i do not know whether she will cope with spelling in a test and at least the green band books are a little harder and we can get something out of it now. she has been asked to practice adding numbers in the teens as she doesn't use the number line to count on. (tends to do these things in her head) well we have practised and introduced a strategy of using number bonds of single digit numbers to check teens+ addition (ie if 2 and 4 =6 then 12+4=16 and 22+4=26 etc) doubt that will go down well! Grin I hope she talks about her strategy at school.

I think I want to push for more, but not until she has had time to try out/prove herself for another month or so. (after all she might go to pieces under test conditions and we have a lot of work to do on handwriting) anyone fancy sitting on me and administering the duct tape for the next month?

(disclaimer, i know she is not doing some of the stuff other really bright children do at this age, though she is the top end of normal and I post mainly because i as fed up of the lack of progress ith reading in school compared to home)

ps, sorry about the lack of capitals, intermittent shift key!

sorry, got a bit distracted. after reading the last post, i thought i had better go get this ort book to look at it. 'twas a good story. oh and level 13. off to check wwhich book band. did n't look that hard to read but some interesting comprehension work to be done I think.

blackeyedsanta · 05/01/2012 23:26

ort reckons stage 13 is overlapping the border between age 8-9 and 9-10! Xmas Shock as i said lots of work on comprehension.

'spect the next book will be a bit easier aas they seem to give us quite a variety.

hmmm definitely written for comprehension skills...

blackeyedsanta · 05/01/2012 23:28

actually, the stuff you lot are saying your dc's read at home are harder than this I think. it does seem quite easy for age 9 though the content is older.

simpson · 05/01/2012 23:38

wow is treetops age 9??? Shock

We have just started on a couple of them with DS and he is quite enjoying them so far. Got a pack of them cheap on Amazon.

outofbodyexperience · 06/01/2012 00:16

Which one is it, bes?

Simpson, ds1's teacher last year told me he paid no attention at all in class. And then gave him top student and the prize cheque.

No incentive at all to actually work, then!

blackeyedsanta · 06/01/2012 07:17

personality potion. level 13.

simpson, level 13 is age 9 don't kno whether there are different levels of treetops. i presume there are a couple. they have updated the ort reading chart and I can't see them on there now. just level 13. it is an old one though if that makes a difference.

simpson · 06/01/2012 08:24

I bought a pack of 15 a few wks ago and gave them to DS as one of his Xmas pressies and it has 5 level 12 ones, 5 level 13 ones & 5 level 14 ones.

Iamnotminterested · 06/01/2012 09:20

Treetops go up to level 16. Your local library probably stocks them, ours does. Be careful getting them on Amazon because even if the books cost a few pence the p&p cost will bump the overall cost up.

CURIOUSMIND · 06/01/2012 09:32

Just found this :
www.oup.com/oxed/primary/oxfordreadingtree/treetops/structure/

I think the colors used for book band from ks2 are different in different schools, unlike ks1.

simpson · 06/01/2012 09:33

Our local library does not have them sadly although they do have some other fab books.

Actually I have now remembered I didn't buy them from Amazon Blush but from the book people with a discount code Grin

I buy soooo much from Amazon its hard to remember what came from where iyswim Blush Grin

blackeyedsanta · 07/01/2012 23:59

we have got the class toy. I have got to extract some writing out of dd tomorrow.

outofbodyexperience · 08/01/2012 00:42

Ha ha ha! We took it to the pub once and took photos of it propped by a plate of chips and a beer, and then leaving via the saloon doors.Grin it was the bar at chateau lake Louise though, so Barney had already been snapped on skis - we propped him up with one leg inside each of whichever child it was's ski boots.

I suspect I may have been the parent from hell on that occasion. But it was v funny.

onesandwichshort · 08/01/2012 11:31

Excellent - we very nearly did it when we got the nursery toy on the weekend we were going to Glastonbury for the Sunday. But in the end, the nightmare of trying to look after the blooming bear won over the photo opportunities with mud, beer, face paints...

blackeyedsanta · 08/01/2012 18:27

the toy has been on a few adventures already as documented in the diary. as we are not going out this weekend, the first adventure he had here was a bath in the basin, then a swim under the sea, followed by a spin in the washing machine. unfortunately he has now had to have cosmetic surgery because his markings washed out with surf. Blush bloody good stuff is surf. Grin I have had to get the sharpie out. Confused

his clothes are still drying so he has been "nude" all weekend. he also needs surgery on his head having arived with an open wound. as there are no instructions accompanying the ruddy thing he is staying a few more days, so i can draw his markings back on and dry his clothes properly and sew the poor thing back together as I do not want to get the blame

simpson · 08/01/2012 22:08

PMSL Grin at the restoration needed for the bloody poor bear Grin

BES - How did your DD get on with her new book??

outofbodyexperience · 08/01/2012 22:19

ohhhhh, i have glastonbury bear envy. how could you miss such an opportunity?! Grin

i think you should take a picture of dd in a doctor's coat caring for the poor drowned and wounded bear now.

simpson · 08/01/2012 22:21

with the scars showing where it has `been mended patched up Grin

blackeyedsanta · 08/01/2012 23:41

it is definitely getting a bandage of some description, and we will have to get the drs kit out. a large white shirt will do for the drs coat I should imagine. ]

ye Gods, it was like pulling teeth to get the writing out of dd. however, as this is on show to the rest of the parents, one feels that is important to at least do something presentable, especially as there are a couple of examples of beautiful handwriting. ( I think it is best not to know what other children are doing, it only makes me cry!)

she has not read her new book as we have spent the working time of the weekend painting as promised (whilst ds was asleep) and writing this bloody diary for the toy, which has taken up all the limited time available.

dd is very good and does not use naughty words, which is very good as I am not and there have been a lot of words said as I try to get the photos out of an email and to the printer. she could have been going back to school with a vastly increased vocabulary. Blush I am not g and t when it comes to the computer.

taking it to glastinbury would have been fab, but the worry of looking after it would have been quite big.

iggly2 · 09/01/2012 08:53

I'd have done Glastonbury. The bear could have lived in a rucksack!

blackeyedsusan · 09/01/2012 21:13

pictures of dd in my cream shirt her white coat with the soft toy and stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, and thermometer. he is also tucked up in bed with bandage on his head, post operation.

with no promise of computer after writing today, she managed to concentrate and write better. Hmm yesterday she was too intent on getting at the computer to concentrate.

Ds got the last level 9 ORT book today. (The last one in the Ks1 building - despite his teacher from last term assessing him at ORT12 Hmm)

Will be interested to see what happens after this book. Will they finally go over to the ks2 building and get some books???!!

Started a "how children learn literacy in the classroom" course today and the tutor (whose DD is on the g&t at her school) said she has massive problems getting the right books for her child now in yr4 and has ended up doing the reading at home herself by going to the library

blackeyedsusan · 10/01/2012 22:30

simpson, they will probably find some other long lost scheme at the back of the cupboard of equal dubious quality.

OP posts:
simpson · 10/01/2012 22:56

Don't say that!!!

Surely it would be less effort to tootle off to Ks2 (next door) and get some decent books

blackeyedsusan · 11/01/2012 07:20

use the school books to do a lot of the comprehension type activities he has to be able to do. retelling the story, predicting what is oging to happen... blah, di, blah.
