Childrens Musicals - Any suggestions?

DSs latest obsession is with his new CD of the Jonah Man Jazz. My sister bought it for him after he loved his cousins copy. My sister and I did it at school so I've been singing along with him.

Well, now I'm getting fed up of it. I'd love to get him some more similar stuff and thought that a Musical soundtrack might be a good idea. Problem is the only Childrens one I can think of is Lion King.

Does anyone have any other suggestions??

There is a lovely Royal Ballet School DVD of Peter and the Wolf - with children dancing the parts along to the narration/music. My ds and dd loved it for years - think it came out in 2000 and that version is quite difficult to get hold of but there was a new production of it last year, this time with some adult Royal Ballet dancers as well I think and there is now a DVD of this later production - see here Peter and the Wolf DVD

Thank you. DS will love that!!! We caught The Tales of Beatrix Potter ballet on TV recently and he was transfixed.

Great thread! My girls love Annie (maybe a bit girl heavy but the songs are great) Joseph, Cats and a lovely book/CD called Gustav Mole about a little mole who played the violin and became a composer. Disney films often have very well written and produced songs so it's worth getting a compilation CD- the songs from Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast are good.

What about collecting some of the lovely old story-telling musical "singles" that were around in the late 60s/early 70s? Who remembers e.g.

  • "come on let's crawl, to the ugly bug ball"
  • "windmill in old Amsterdam"
  • "Right said Fred" by Bernard Cribbins
  • "Mud mud glorious mud - nothing quite like it etc"
  • "Puff the Magic Dragon"

The old ones are the best, especially if you are 4, IMHO - much better than the eponymous Wiggles, fruit salad, cold spaghetti etc aargh.
