my 10 yr old son has certain traits of mild adhd. His issues are mainly
with short attention span and distractability. Its having a big impact on his school work. Its become more evident with his preparation for the 11+. I live in the kingston area and i don't know what i should do now to get him assessed. With the 11+ exams coming up so soon time is of the essence.

He's not statemented in school? Then speak to his class teacher and the SENCO. Has is teacher shown any concerns?

His teacher says he is very bright but not working to his full potential because his lack of concentration. he finds it difficult to sit still, hes always fidgeting. He also finds it difficult to stand still in line. He's not statemented i dont know how to get him assessed. Can anyone help?

Your school's SENCO should be a good place to start - you will need the school's support for this. Sounds like they are aware of the issue. Also, go and see your GP who can refer your son for assessment. Is going private an option for you? That would speed things up - weeks, rather than months. Good luck with it all, it can be stressful but keep your chin up for your DS :)

High ability/giftedness can often be misdiagnosed as ADHD. Can you get a professional to diagnose? Or if you suspect he is bright you could have his IQ tested. Or he could be both ADHD and high ability! I'm not much help am I?

High ability & ADHD are possible together - well certainly I believe I have both traits. Diagnosis for SDHD in adults is not widely available on the NHS so I'm saving for a private diagnosis.

When diagnosing an adult the key thing they look at is school reports and things such as "lack of focus" and "not fulfilling potential" both of which are all over my reports.

Speak to anyone that will listen to get him the support he needs. I consider myself to be pretty successful in life, but I could've done so much more.

i teach at a school for g&t, specialising in kids with learning difficulties, such as adhd, dyslexia, bi-polar etc etc.

so both can co-exist, definitely.

kickassangel - are there state schools for this? Would you be able to give me a link to any websites? We have had NHS ed psych report confirming IQ in top 1% tho as yet have no diagnosis for his difficulties. Many thanks.

OP - we found ed psyc report very helpful for confirming our thoughts on his potential and also to identify weaknesses. ould recommend paying privately if not available on NHS or if you need speed.
