reasing levels

I have been told that dd is G and T for literacy. In January she was reading ORT Stage 6 books. In March she was moved up to ORT 7 books. On Friday a note was put in her record to say she has moved up to to ORT 6.

I have mentioned this once and |I have been told its right but clearly it isn't. However, I don't know whether to mention it again or go with the flow.

Must learn to type. Reading Levels.

Either a simple mistake, or could she have been moved down?

greencaveman · 09/05/2011 18:54

Has she not got a reading card where the titles of the books are recorded to prove that she was reading level 7?

If the books that she is reading are too easy for her, then let the school know.

york79 · 09/05/2011 19:20

We have a reading record book. So yes I can show teacher. Was reading level 7 books comfortably. I believe it was a mistake as it even said in book "Moved up". I guess I don't want to come across as a pushy parent.

Could it be to do with comprehension?

Wafflenose · 09/05/2011 20:47

I would write a polite note in the reading record, saying that there has been a mistake, and explaining what has happened. Unless it's possible that she has been moved up a colour band - the ORT levels don't always correspond exactly to the book bands, so it's possible to have a lower ORT number at a higher band if that makes sense?

york79 · 09/05/2011 21:15

Good point Waffle. Will have to check book band levels.

how old is she?

york79 · 09/05/2011 21:18

just turned 5. In reception

I'd have a word with her teacher about it. The moved up part doesn't really fit with going from 7 to 6.

DD in reception can choose from a box which has different levels of ORT and other books so not sure quite what level she is at the moment. Probably helps with my instinctive wanting her to do well feelings tbh.

NotaMopsa · 09/05/2011 21:26

i don't understand where the g and t bit comes in. Surely they don't put children on it if only been at school 6 months?

grumpy2 · 09/05/2011 21:51

Did seem odd to be too. But I have been told she is G and T. Whatever that means at 5.

grumpy2 · 09/05/2011 21:51

Oops namechanged.

NotaMopsa · 09/05/2011 22:30

I love a keen reader me. Well done to your dd ( those books are loooooong though! Wink makes nightly reading slightly more of a chore!)

KatCan · 09/05/2011 23:03

I know that at my DDs school, sometimes they mix the levels of the books because occassionally the subject matter or context make the book a little harder than the banded level, if that makes sense? Basically, using their judgement, the teachers decide that actually, although ORT have marked a book Level 6, the teachers feel it more appropriate for Level 7 readers, iyswim!

duckypoo · 09/05/2011 23:16

My dd was the same, started on level 7 in reception then just stayed on it for what seemed an age, she eventually went up to whatever level is lime. Whatever her main level was, she was allowed to choose books from a wide range of levels, whatever she fancied.

I imagine it's a typo, just see what books she comes home with.

NotaMopsa · 10/05/2011 01:06

actually in the ort that is true

the treasure chest is ORT 6 but in turquoise book band which is mostly level 7...works both ways i assume

i am an ORT bore btw - can you tell Wink?

RoadArt · 18/05/2011 20:00

I wouldnt worry about it, let your child read the books. It doesnt matter
