ds is in reception. He is reading turquoise books confortably. However, since moving up I am finding he is quite reluctant to read. He says they are too long. How can I get his interest back?

My DD quite liked it when we alternated, I read a page she read a page.

Many children find this an issue initially. I think the sheer fullness of pages can make them panic a bit.

Choose books that have

  • lots of colour pictures to seperate the text out
  • decent sized font/text - not too small
  • well spaced writing, ushc as double line spacing between each line of text

And es, I would agree with the shared reading - read a page each.

Goo dpoint on how much he is having to read in one night. I would set a time - such as 5-10 minutes. Read for those minutes and then stop and put it away. If he wants to read more fair enough or even read another of his own books. But I would just set a 5 minute time for the book, read together and then move on. If he is still reluctant initially, just do a page or two a night depending on how much text is on each page. he definitely doesn't need to be reading the full book in a night or two.

Thank you for your replies. Books are changed 3 times per week so we can just do a set amount each evening. Alternating is a good idea too. Thank you. I also guess that school would be fine if he changed books less frequently.

Once we got to that level it was harder to do a whole book in one sitting. Definitely split it over two nights if it gets too long for him. No point him getting put off as reading should be for enjoyment.

He might adjust anyway within a few weeks, or you'll find he's so desperate to know what happens in the story he wants to read on.
