What do these scores mean?

No G&T scheme here (Ireland) in schools. Children are tested annually in schools. My dd (aged 10) scored highly, and teacher recommended testing her for CTYI (Centre for Talented Youth). I did, and she scored 95th percentile for abstract reasoning, thus qualifying.

However, both verbal and mathematical reasoning was 'out of age' testing, i.e. tested against those 2 years older. She scored 40 in verbal, but only 9 in maths. This seems low, but I don't really know what it means.

She has always said she struggles with maths and sums, but her teacher has said that this is only because she finds other subjects so easy. Is 9 low, average?

If it is below average, and she really is struggling I would rather spend my limited resources addressing this, than on quite expensive CTYI camps.

Just to add, 9 means she scores better than 9% of children 2 years up from her in school. In order to qualify as being talented in maths, she would need to have scored 50.

Hello, I'm a teacher! I don't have any exact figures to work with (ie how many children you'd expect to be able to outperform those 2 years older) - but if she scored better than 9% of the children who are two years older than her, she is obviously not 2 years ahead in maths, or even a year ahead probably. Presumably they were the weaker maths students from that year, but they are working below her level. My best guess here is that she is about average for her age at maths. I wouldn't have thought you have anything to worry about, and it sounds like her teacher isn't worried. It might just be that she will need to work at this area as she doesn't find it as easy as everything else. Well done to her on her achievements!

Thanks wafflenose, that is reassuring.
