Gifted and talented

Talk to other parents about parenting a gifted child on this forum.

Has anyone's child been put on the G&T register just for their singing ability.

On friday dd2 aged 7 (year 3) won the school talent show. The head came and spoke to me after school and said she thought her voice was amazing and said something about putting her on the gifted and talented register.

Now I thought the register was for children who excelled in maths or literacy (which she struggles with both at the moment).

Does she have to be assessed? If so how and what will being on this register do for her?

Thanx

Hello!
I;m a music teacher but of older kids than your dd. (Yeah for your DD winning the talent show!)

I think the ethos of the gifted and talented list is about school (and parent) awareness of students' skills and talents.

I wouldn't think she would be assessed but it may lead to more opportunities such as if visiting musicians came, she and others in lass with similar interests may be invited to join in for example. It's usually meant to represent ability rather than assessed acheivments.

G and T is for any student that shows a particular strength in any area of school subjects - have a look at this document www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/giftedandtalented/downloads/pdf/identifying_gandt_pupils.pdf

I think it can be really useful if I am more aware of the 'naturally' musical kids. It may lead to her teachers suggested sh learns a msucial isntrument, gets invlved in school play etc. None of these have to happen it jsut might be something she is good at.

Sorry if I;ve been a bit jumbled -in bed with chest infection
