Parent confused by 'Gifted & Talented' issues

Hi,

  1. I've heard rumours that the gifted and talented scheme is to be scrapped - but the DirectGov site 'Supporting gifted and talented children' makes no mention of this - can anyone help?

  2. Eldest child {sorry, have no idea what all the initials people use mean! } is way ahead of Y1 class on reading - but not sure whether this constitutes 'gifted' or just 'quite bright' and do not want to be seen as pushy parent! Teachers have made no mention of her inclusion on GT register - hence wondering about 1) above

Help, advice or general comments appreciated as am feeling quite lost at mo!

L

The "gifted" designation is only an accounting exercise in most schools, so it really doesnt matter whether your child gets or deserves the label or not.

If he needs more reading material I suggest a visit to public library, as they often have a broad range of early readers books. hth.

Hello longrat, is provision in place already to stretch your child? Does she do extra reading 1:1 or in a group with similar children?

@ragged - thanks - that's reassuring! We have LOADS of books at home too - it's just not knowing what to expect / if there is additional resources that can allow her to get to where she can as happy well-balanced child

@lovecheese - She has been allowed to progress at her own pace in reading she brings home and apparently does reading with a small group - although this seems to be irregular and supported by teaching assistants. AFAIK she has not had 1:1.
