Iridology - Anyone been for this?

Beaaware · 09/07/2010 09:39

Had an Iridology test done about 13 years ago out of curiousity, now all these years later wish I had heeded the advice, it is an interesting way to examine ones health and I now believe it was actually quite accurate.
Going for a follow up soon, anyone else tried this?

There is no reason to think that iridology might have diagnostic ability.

The idea that the iris has any links to the wellbeing of organs all over the body stands opposed to all modern anatomy and physiology.

In addition, it has been extensively studied and has never managed to perform better than chance.

I think you would be wasting your time and money repeating your experience.

Well, you can def spot the copper deposits in the iris in Wilson's disease and that is one of the diagnostic features.
This will not be easily visible in other body tissues but copper deposits in the eye indicate copper deposits in other organs which can be toxic, so indicative of other problems.
Woudn't discount it completely.

Copper builds up in the cornea as part of Wilson's Disease.

Not the iris.

And you can identify a lot o diseases from the eye.

But almost none from the iris.

And none through the teachings of iridology.

i had it done once when i was going through my alternative medicine phase.

expensive. probably quite interesting. but expensive. and not particularly useful.

nightcat · 10/07/2010 20:15

to me that's more iris than cornea?

Wilson's

I happen to know someone with Wilson's and theirs is more patchy. However I am not a medical expert.

DB, as we are on the subject, I would like to know what else can be deduced from eyes?

DBennett · 10/07/2010 21:37

The wikipedia article says that copper is deposisted in the cornea.
The cornea is the clear window of skin directly in front of the iris.
Maybe this explains your confusion.

The list could be lengthy, it depends on whether you mean changes that are found in the eye as a result of the disease, changes in the eye that could be the result of disease but might be normal aging.

Lets just stick with the more common, important and those which are more reliable (the eye signs are good predictors of disease).

The most important one is Diabetes. Eye examinations have been reported to be the most common way type II Diabetes is detected in the UK.
Because viewing the retina enables you to see blood vessels directly it is a good place to detecet vascular abnormalities. High Blood Pressure & High Cholesterol can also be detected from examining the eye.

nightcat · 11/07/2010 16:25

thanks DB, just curious, what exactly would the diabetes related blood vessels damage look like in the eye or otherwise?

DBennett · 11/07/2010 16:30

The Royal College of Ophthalmology has published these photos of the retina.

nightcat · 11/07/2010 16:43

I see, thank you DB, quite a lot of changes possible then

nightcat · 11/07/2010 16:44

that was meant to be and

Beaaware · 11/07/2010 17:50

The more information on this the better for me, when I went 13 years ago I was scepitcal and did'nt want to believe what was written in the report, but all these years later I have to admit that some of what was written was very accurate and in hindsight I should have taken it seriously. What puzzles me though is if these alternative methods of
diganosis are questionable why do people bother to do studies and practice iridolgy, I am eager to find out what the iridologist tells me this time round and I won't be giving her the original report to go back on. In conjuction with the eye photo she does reflexology, again this is something I am scepitcal about but have heard from people that it works.

I think people perform iridology (and reflexology for that matter) for two reasons, they believe it works and there are people who will pay for it becuase they believe it works.

Unfortunately both those who practise and those who pay are mistaken.
