Hello, My mum (63-high blood pressure and over weight) has developed a problem with her eye since 4 this afternoon.
It started off that she could see a black smudge through her right eye then, she washed her makeup off incase it was to do with that.
The black mark then changed shape-like a big black worm.It stayed like this for a few hours then it looked like smoke and now she says it looks like a net over her eye.
She can see it when her eye is closed and the net shape is moving even when her eye is still.
She has phoned NHS direct and the said they couldnt do anything as it is such an early problem. They were very interested that she had a camera put up her nose yesterday when a specialist was looking for the causes of her frequent nose bleeds.
I would like her to go to A&E but she is saying wait till the morning.
Can anybody help?

I would go to A&E now. Don't know much about eyes, but it sounds as if it should be looked at asap.

Are you anywhere near an eye unit/hospital?

bruxeur · 07/07/2010 19:55

Could be a retinal detachment or a vitreous haemorrhage, both of which are emergencies. A+E immediately.

May not be either, but how many eyes do you get?

I really want her to go but she is so reluctant asthe NHS direct have not seemed to concerned.

Well done !
Let us know what happens .

Sounds like a Posterior Vitreous Detachment, where the jelly inside the eye shrinks and pullls away from the retina at the back.

This in itself is not serious and everyone will experience it if they live long enough but they are serious things that should be ruled out so it's good to get this checked out.

I might have suggested an optometrist first thing in the morning but I understand the impulse to do something now.

Im back.
They did lots of tests on her but couldnt see the retina as there is so much blood in her eye (surely not a good sign). The doctor has booked her an appt at the eye clinic at the hosp tomorrow morning so we will know more then.
Ill update when i know more.

she should go to A and E . It could just be a floater...or it could be related to her high blood pressure as you can get high intra ocular pressure too.

nobodysfool - you must be exhausted .
Good luck this morning .

violetqueen · 08/07/2010 21:02

how's it going ?

nobodysfool · 08/07/2010 21:49

DH took my mum to the eye clinic today and stayed with her while she was prodded, poked, lights shone in eyes, ultra sound on eye, numerous drops.
They were there for 6 hours!!!
the retina is intact and hasnt torn but there is a massive haemorrhage which has completly wiped out all vision in 1 eye.
They want to see her again in 2 weeks and if it hasnt cleared itself in 6 months time she will have to have it operated on.
They couldnt find the cause of it.
Poor Mum.
