Does this sound like I've done something to my finger???

OK - 11.15 this morning was ironing in the kitchen and playing at 'chasing' the boys away from the gate. All going swimmingly until I pretended to swipe them - and whacked my middle finger (Left Hand) on the door (not sure if it was edge if door, or the 'flat' bit'.

More painful that when I (frequently) stub my toe, and went sort of 'numb' (while being painful - if that makes sense). Was still able to wiggle it around so not 'too' concerned.

20 minutes later it felt like it was getting worse, could still wiggle it, but couldn't clench my fist, or completely straighten my fingers out.

30 minutes later still able to wiggle finger but 'achey' even when not moving it - now verging on being VERY painful to clench fist or straighten fingers (was continuing to iron still though getting increasingly difficult).

I then put ice on it for 1/2hr (and had 2 paracetomal) - but now it's STILL the same, and I can't really use my left ahnd to do much as even if I try to use my index finger and thumb my middle finger seems to 'automatically' move.

DH reckons I should give it a day before worrying - what do you wise MN'ers think???

It could just be bruised badly, I'd wait awhile and see how it is tomorrow morning......

tortoiseshell · 17/08/2005 13:16

Hmm QofQ - if you weren't you I would say wait and see, but because I know you like me are an organist it would definitely be worth getting it looked at. Could you have dislocated it? (I did that to my thumb at school and was v painful!). Could you pop over to your local A&E just for an xray? Hope it's ok!

QueenOfQuotes · 17/08/2005 13:17

I hope that's all I've done to it, I'm left handed - plus DH is working from 3-9pm tonight - so I've got to cook dinner snd pit the boys to bed too all with my right hand eeek!

QueenOfQuotes · 17/08/2005 13:21

tortoise - our 'local' A&E is a good 20 minute drive away in the car (and I don't even live in the middle of no-where LOL).

It's the knuckle that's hurting - could that be discolated (can you dislocate a knuckle????)

Could you call NHS Direct???
I am useless with medical stuff...I hate doctors!

Lizzylou · 17/08/2005 13:24

I don't hate doctors...just going to them....sorry, not slagging off the medical profession...just waiting rooms!

Nbg · 17/08/2005 13:26

It could be your tendon.

I have done a similar thing. It is very painful. A&E just put my finger in a splint for a couple of weeks and gave me some painkillers.

QueenOfQuotes · 17/08/2005 13:29

"A&E just put my finger in a splint for a couple of weeks"

oooh - I hope it's just bruising!!! I couldn't cope, being left handed, and an organist with my left middle finger people ina splint for a couple of weeks!!!

Lizzy - I'm the same, think they do a fab job, but don't like having to go and see rhem

Agree with Nbg, sounds like the tendon to me.

I suffer from 'trigger finger' in my left hand, a form of Tendonitis - you have my sympathy QoQ. It might be a minor injury but I know how intense the pain can be.

Recommend Ibruprofen (sp?) rather than paracetamol, as it will reduce any swelling.

Gentle exercise is essential although bloody painful so once painkillers have kicked in try to flex and relax hand a few times. Ice afterwards if you need to then rest it, stick that hand in a sling if you have to. If no improvement in 24 hrs you should see your GP or take a trip to A & E, you might need a shot of steroids (thinking of your musical career here).

Hope it gets better soon.

QueenOfQuotes · 17/08/2005 13:58

Thanks St.G - I have tentively (sp) been trying to flex and relax already, think we've got some neurofen (is that the same thing as Ibruprofen?) in the cupboard so may take some later (before having to face cooking dinner).

Never suffered from Tendonitis of any form before, but had several friends at school (music school) who did. You have my complete sympathy as I remeber them having to cope with the pain reguarly (one poor lad had to give up playing the violin - he was SOOOO talented too ).

Pretty sure it's not dislocated, been googling it, and it doesn't seem to fit that 'pattern' (ie my finger actually looks pretty normal and not at all crooked LOL)

Hopefully it's just bruising - and in the morning I'll be telling you all how 'black' my fingers looks because of the massive bruise (already one forming on the bottom of my finger under the knuckle LOL).

Yes to Nurofen

SaintGeorge · 17/08/2005 14:08

Just thought - you don't have asthma do you? Shouldn't take Neurofen if you do.

Also, make sure you take after or with food - never on an empty stomach.

QueenOfQuotes · 17/08/2005 14:17

No - no asthma

How are you doing now?

Didn't mean my post as it might have come across. It was just that when I injured my finger I was in so much pain having a splint felt like such a fob off, hence me saying just.

Hope it's feeling a bit better.

QueenOfQuotes · 17/08/2005 17:49

Nbg - I'm thinking it's possible just badly bruised, still very sore, but can use it a little bit more now (thankgoodness - was having kittens about having to find someone to play the organ for me on Sunday in the middle of August - ie an impossibility LOL).

as for how your post came across........didn't come across as anything nasty at all - the reason I commented on the bit with "just" it was because of the mention of "splint" and "weeks"

OP posts:
QueenOfQuotes · 17/08/2005 17:49

the underneath part of the knuckle is now a lovely blue/black colour

OP posts:
Nbg · 17/08/2005 17:50

Lol at having kittens! Great saying!

Fingers crossed it's better for sunday.

SaintGeorge · 17/08/2005 17:52

Fingers crossed here too QoQ - wouldn't recommend you trying the same though, it would hurt a LOT!

QueenOfQuotes · 18/08/2005 01:15

ooo blimey getting paranoid now - can move it a little bit more (now the initial pain has gone) but still can't clench my fist at all, or completely straighten my fingers. Also still looks a bit swollen, and the palm side of my knuckle has a whopping great bruise (hardly suprising really) and a "numbish" feeling across the skin (I can feel things on it, but the feeling is duller than usual - well apart from if someone presses too hard and then I squeal).

OP posts:
QueenOfQuotes · 22/08/2005 23:12

Ho hum - update on "the finger"

Up until Friday/Saturday time it seemed to be getting a lot better. But then since the start of the weekend it's started hurting again - nowhere near as painful as on Wednesday/Thursday but still pretty uncomfortable, and enough to stop me putting any real sort of medium/heavy pressure on it.

The swelling still hasn't gone completely down, although is going down slowly by the day. Although I can clench my fist again, it's still sore on my knuckle when I do so.. And playing the organ on Sunday - OMG - didn't realise quite how much pressure I put on my fingers when I played

QueenOfQuotes · 06/09/2005 00:15

hmmm - beginning to think I should maybe go see the dr. I've been able to use it ok for a few weeks now. But I've noticed, particularly when I've been playing for a service at church (especially if I play the piano) that it 'aches' quite a lot.

And to make matters even more slightly worrying (?), DH were just messing around (no not that sort of messing around and he pushed my hand back and my fist got pushed quite hard (but no 'painfully' so into my thigh.

I was in agony again - so much so it brought tears to my eyes, that was about 5 minutes ago. Again I can still use it, but its defintely feeling 'tender' again [frown]

vickitiredmum · 06/09/2005 00:30

QOQ - sometimes if you burst a blood vessel quite badly it can be like that - especially if some blood leaks into the joint it can take ages to heal and once you have done it, it can be really easy to re-burst it over and over.
