Think I have had a reaction to a plaster

Had a plaster put on my breast yesterday (was having checks done on a lump I had noticed) and the area has been sore and uncomfortable today but I didn't think anything of it but on close inspection there are raised clear blisters where the ends of the plaster were - is this a reaction to the plaster?? It is not the whole area of it just along the edges.

Is there anything I can put on it or should I leave it be?

Yes it does sound like it might be a reaction to the adhesive.

Leave it bare and it should settle down.

It'll be a reaction to the glue. Have you cleaned the area?

nancydrewrocks · 02/07/2010 21:36

I'm allergic to elastoplast , apparently it is common.

Just clean and leave

thanks for your replies

have never had a reaction to a plaster before!

yes it has been cleaned thoroughly several times as I also have a black biro circle in the vacinity that is stubbornly refusing to budge.

Happened to me too recently and also at the edge of the plaster, not under it (healed since). Having given it more thought I realised that I do blister easily (from shoes, tools - eg choping up an onion will leave me with a blister from holding a knife). I have concluded that rather than allergic reaction, what happened to me is probably a result of weakened connective tissue between skin layers and/or possibly Zn deficiency as my ds also has some connective tissue problems (blisters, stretchmarks) for which he takes Zn supplement. As plaster is less stretchy than skin, any movement will aggravate the area around the edge, for me it was obvious that the side with more movement was more affected by blistering.

I was thinking nightcat that it might be where the plaster was rather than the plaster skin more sensitive there and everytime I moved my arm it was causing discomfort, think maybe you are right.

This happened to me too a few months ago for the first time - and similarly it was a plaster on the breast. The skin underneath seemed a bit oddly wrinkled rather than blistered and it took a few weeks to get back to normal. As I've not had reactions to plasters before I'm hoping it was either that specific make or just because the skin was particularly sensitive there.

mine was close to the top of the shoulder, and blistered towards the shoulder but not towards the centre, yes, it could be that certain areas of skin are more sensitive, although I blister on heals too
