Contraception - Coil, Injection or implant?

Dillie · 02/07/2010 20:41

I had my yearly pill and blood pressure check and all was fine.

The nurse suggested that maybe I should look at trying other types of contraception, like the injection or coil. She gave me some leaflets which are fairly informative.

The thought of a coil makes me cross my legs tight and I am not sure about the other two methods.

Personally I feel the fact that I am taking the mini-pill, it is a physical thing, so I know that I am protected ... control thing I guess. Having said that, when I forget to take the pill, I then spend the rest of the month worrying myself half to death that I am pg!!!

I am pondering about the implant, as a mate of mind had it done, and after a couple of dodgy months, seems to be ok on it.

I am not planning on having any more children, and my dh refuses point blank to have his nuts cut!

Any thoughts? What are the methods like? side effects etc?

I have used the injection for 4 years and have had the implant in for one year now. Both brilliant for me. No periods, no side effects............but I have a friend who tried the injsction and had a nightmare with it!!!!!

minera coil is fab. I was so scared about having it put in but after 2 DCs and a few smears, it was a pice of cake.

Hardly any periods, no side effects and no more worrying about getting pg for 5 years. FAB!

I have a copper coil and it really isn't as bad as people make out. Ok, having it put in made me feel really sick and I got strong period pains for a few hours after but I also haven't had children which makes insertion worse.

I've had my coil since January and would really recommend it. I like being able to feel the strings and know that its still there and that I have no chance of not using it correctly/forgetting it.

I have had heavier and more painful periods but I am certain that they are settling down already. However, heavy periods is not something that bothers me. The doctor did say that if it did there was something I could take to make them lighter though.

Mine lasts 10 years so I don't have to think about contraception until I get round to having kids.

I have a mirena coil and they are fab! I don't have any periods which is great. Apart from a yearly check up I can forget all about it until the 5 yrs are up.
Having it fitted wasn't pleasant but it was worth it. I did have light bleeding about once a month for the first 6 months but then nothing. No noticable side effects for me and I've had mine in 3 yrs now. Highly recommend it if you are not wanting any more children for the time being.
