I'm fairly sure my dad had librium when he underwent a proper medical detox.

It's not pleasant but the drugs do help, he had a lot of hallucinations, pains, vomiting, incontinence, sweats etc

I think it took about 2 weeks although it wasn't that bad for the whole fortnight.

As I recall he lasted about 2/3 days after the two weeks and then started drinking again.

I hope your friend wants to stop drinking because that is the most important thing. In terms of your help, you can be supportive but the onus is on her/him to help themselves and to want to turn their life around.

I hope it goes well.

Well she/he is lucky to have a friend like you wanting to help and caring.

That is all you can do as the rest is up to the drinker, harsh I know but so true.

Good luck x

Muriel did your dad ever get sober?

Hi, my brother is an alchoholic and has done a few detoxes in hospital, the most recent with librium. In the past Diazapam was used.
The drugs are really good and keep the withdrawl symptoms to a minimum.
My brother liked to have lots of visitors, he also needed nicotine patches as it's difficult to go and smoke so this might be helpful to your friend if they are a smoker. Aso my bro liked to have lots of cold fizzy drinks such as Sprite becaus you only get jugs of water in hospital which are usually luke warm.
Bro had a siezure whilst detoxing but no other bad symptoms.
Good luck to your friend and I agree entirely with Muriel76, in the end, they have to do it themselves and want to stop. That's the only way

FrameyMcFrame · 05/07/2010 10:45

oh and by the way, they medicate much better now for this and a detox only takes 3 to 5 days and involves a lot less pain than in the past...

FrameyMcFrame · 05/07/2010 10:48

also, if you can, go into their house and clear away all traces of alchohol for when they get home.
The last thing they will need after a detox is to get home and be confronted by a bottle of cider sitting on the kitchen table.

I'm afraid not Librium. It killed him in the end, but he had been alcoholic for many many years.

Thanks to FMF for the more up to date info too, I am talking about 6 or so years ago, good to know the meds etc have got better

librium · 05/07/2010 22:09

thanks Muriel and FMF
So sorry about your dad.It really is a killer.

Glad to hear your friend is doing well!

Muriel, sorry to hear about your Dad. My other brother also died an alchoholic, from liver disease. It's an awful thing for families to go through. x
