Veruccas - how did you get rid of them?

My two kids have had one each since way befor easter. I've tried Bazuka, some homeopathic thing called Thuja and now Scholl sticky things and they are still there but bigger and more unsightly.

I religiously change their dressing each night and file away the dead bit. When I think I've gotten down to the last bit, when there are tiny little dark spots, I file these and then it starts bleeding.

Help!

Can your gp not freeze them off? Don't make them bleed, they can spread even more when that happens apparently.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 29/06/2010 17:33

Oh hell. I'll take them to GP and see what she says.

I would definitely try that, it's apparently more effective than those freezing thingys you can buy over the counter. I had tons and tons when I was pg (17 on one foot) and I begged the gp to burn them off because chemists wouldn't sell me any verruca treatments. It did work (they came back again though, but that was more likely to be because of my reduced immunity in pregnancy). I did slightly over dramatise how painful they were, though they were actually quite sore.

My dds have both had one that lasted maybe 3 months each - don't know what makes them go, I think it's just "their time" eventually! I bazooka extra strengthed and peeled off (when they'd let me) rather than filing. Good luck, they're a pain but they'll go in time.

whoopstheregoesmymerkin · 29/06/2010 21:33

Duct tape. Kid you not. Didn't believe it til I tried it. 10 year old verrauca gone in a month...
google it, go on...

changemylife · 29/06/2010 23:05

Have tried bazooka ... didnt work for my two kids. Have tried wartner and it is working slowly.

I'm so glad I read this. I have one I can't shift and I thought it was just me weird.

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/06/2010 21:37

ive got 3 that my lovely DC gave me 3 frigging years ago - if there was a nuclear war they would survive it along with cockroaches and rats.

today i was talking to a chiropodist - she said good old duct tape. she said file it with sandpaper, dab of pure T tree oil, then cover with duct tape for 6 days - then 1 day off, then another 6 with tape following same as above. she said change tape after baths/showers and within 3 weeks the thing should fall off with the tape.
im gonna try it.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 30/06/2010 21:47

DS1 (4.5) has one but as it's not bothering him, I'm not doing anyting about it.

Do they just go by themselves eventually or am I going to have to start messing about with treating it?

They go away by themselves after a year or so (only a few days/weeks of pain though).

If you actively get rid of them you risk the body not getting the full natural immunity to the HPV virus, and veruccas returning very quickly.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 30/06/2010 21:52

Right, thanks for that.

As he's not bothered by it, I'll leave it alone for the time being.

We barely ever go swimming, but I guess I'll have to get one of thse awful plastic socks for him when we do?

Lonicera · 30/06/2010 21:54

I've had one for about 9 years and it seems to be getting bigger. I'm really fed up of it now.

In the early days I actively tried to remove it and failed, so now I'm waiting for it to go by itself. It's not working though

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/06/2010 21:59

my son had the worst veruccas our GP had ever seen. they did not have any intention of going away by themselves.

nor do mine it seems. maybe we have bred some super veruccas at our house.

Eaglebird · 30/06/2010 22:19

I had a verucca for years, and it recently faded away by itself after numerous attempts at killing it with Bazuka & other things.
Now I have another one on the same foot, about 1cm away from where the old one was.
Aargh.

eatyourveg · 30/06/2010 22:31

scooze the ignorance but was it duct tape?

I tried everything, for 5 years, and I mean everything. I do not have time to go to GP or anywhere else.

Finally bought (expensive) wartner. Took 3 goes but worked, and they have never come back.
