What is physiotherapy like?

I injured my knee a few weeks ago and can't straighten my leg fully, I can walk pretty well but with a limp.

The doctor wants to try a couple of months of physiotherapy before considering surgery, which is fine but I have absolutely no idea what to expect. Has anyone had a course of physio- what was it like? Will I need to wear gym-type clothes? Will it make my leg ache- I've stopped using a crutch now but not sure if I should take one to the appointment in case my leg is really sore afterwards?

Would love to hear anyone's experiences!

I've had physio many times for running injuries - mostly knees.

I wear loose trousers or trackie bottoms.

I've never felt really sore afterwards - but have felt loosened up and a lot better.

You may need to undress from the waist down for the initial assessment so the physio can also have a proper look at your back, hips, leg muscles and walking pattern. This would take place in a private or curtained off area to preserve your dignity. Thereafter it is usually practical to wear loose tracksuit bottoms or shorts depending on the treatment. They would advise you what to expect next. Sometimes the initial assesssment can cause a bit of discomfort so taking the crutch along is a good idea. They can than also check the crutch and make sure it's the right height. Hope that helps.

Just read this back and would like to clarify that when I say undress from the waist down please be reassured that you can keep your knickers on!!

Thanks all for the responses, i'll wear trackie bottoms or shorts then depending on the weather. I just hope that it'll help my knee.

I had physio for a knee problem - just wore tracky bottoms I think - lots of sitting on a chair lifting leg at different angles to strengthen the muscles. Nothing to worry about - and it did the trick. Best of luck.

I had physio for a neck/back injury and just wore my normal clothes. Although, if it's your knee you might be getting on some of the equipment, so what you've suggested will probably be best. Make sure that you think about exactly where and when you have the pain in your knee, as they ask lots of questions about this. I always found... bloody sod's law... that I'd always get the pain inbetween my appointments and then be fine when I was there! Also, in my experience they were quite quick to discharge so be firm and keep rebooking until your problem has totally gone!! Good luck!
