They know what they are talking about these doctors dont they? They would'nt tell you the oucome of test results unless they were absolutely sure would they?

My mum had routine breast cancer scan almost 2 weeks ago, today she had to go back, she only told us when she got back that it was for a biopsy, the tests are due back next wednesday but she has been been told it is most definatley cancer and she will need surgery.

It is one lump they have found, deep inside so she could'nt feel it, about the size of a cherry tomato. Can these experts really tell it's cancer just by looking at the sample? or should they have not said anything at all?

sorry, heading should have read, they would'nt tell you the outcome before test results come back unless they were sure.

I think that they can be very sure from the mammogram.
I think that it is best to say. They are probably 99.9% sure, and better to be honest rather than not say anything.

Hope that your mums treatment goes well for her.

I think if they have said it's cancer, then they are really pretty sure.

FWIW the outlook for breast cancer is generally pretty good, specially when it's been found from a screening rather than once someone is already feeling ill and going to the GP about symptoms, so fingers crossed all will be well.

Thanks for the info

My mum had one, found by a mammogram, though hers was more like the size of a pea. She had to have it cut out, then have a second op because they didn't get as much clear margin round it as they wanted. Then had some pills for a while (something hormonal I think - it varies with what sort of lump it is, and sometimes they have radiation instead or as well). She's been clear for about 4 years now and no signs of trouble. I think the recovery rates are really pretty good, so hopefully your mum will not have to go through too much, and then be clear of it.

whoingodsnameami - I was in a similar situation to your mum 2 years ago. I was told it was almost certainly cancer before the result came back. Mine too was deep under the nipple and I couldn't feel it.

However, I've been having treatment, - BC is a very treatable disease these days, and there's alot of support for BC patients. Your mum's Breast Care Nurse can help her through the waiting and testing, and Breast Cancer Care have helplines for people who are diagnosed/awaiting diagnosis. I am happy to answer anything questions you think I can help with.

Can anyone go with your mum to her next appointment? - it can be hard to take everything in on your own. I wish your mum all the very best, and if there is anything you or she would like to talk about, you will find also good support on the Check your Breasts thread, or the Tamoxifen thread. take care x

Thanks kurrikurri, I might well have some questions in the near future. My mum has my stepdad to go with her to her appointments.

Glad your treatment is going well
