Super-Smelly-Alcoholic-Ketoacidosis

I had the misfortune of standing downwind from my alcoholic ex yesterday and noticed a strong chemical smell. She smelled like overripe apples bobbing in nailpolish remover. My best guess is that the excess booze and lack of food is causing alcoholic ketoacidosis.

Does anyone know how dangerous this is? I've had a search online but there doesn't seem to be any consistent message - some pages indicate that it's nothing much to worry about, others suggest that it can be much more serious.

Untreated ketoacidosis can lead to coma and death so she needs to see a doctor quickly. Obviously, if she keeps on drinking she's also at risk of cirrhosis, hepatities and liver disease.

Yikes. Thanks for that. I'll see if I can persuade her.

i have no idea but i had to congratulate you on your thread title

I couldn't resist

I do try to find the humour in the situation otherwise the sheer senseless tragedy of it would be overwhelming.

i am very sorry about the sheer senseless tragedy aspect of it, as well
not much more depressing than watching someone you have loved / do love destroy themselves in such a revolting way

do you still have a lot of contact with her? do you have children together?

Snorbs · 27/06/2010 22:33

It is sad. She's been slowly but steadily getting worse for years.

We do have children together hence there is still a need to keep in contact. Saying that, she's not been sober enough to see the DCs properly since April.

aw heck that is bad
sorry for you and the children too
could you contact someone on her behalf, a health professional perhaps?
