Hi mumsnetters am really after your advice and opinions on what is happening in my mouth. Wednesday started with toothache which woke me up during the night it was high in my right jaw. Didn't have anything on Thursday but then on Thursday night had a real throbbing toothache managed to get some sleep but all day Friday I was in agony with pain in three back teeth and pain when I clenched my teeth together barely ate a thing it was awful was in tears most of the night. Again mananged to get some sleep last night and today I have had a dull throbbing in the same three teeth but nothing like yesterday and can now clench my teeth together without the pain. Any ideas as to what it can be absolutely petrified of the dentist and have a complete phobia of having teeth out. Any advice or ideas will be greatfully received and thanx for reading

it sounds very much like an abcess, is there any swelling on your gums around the painful teeth? If it is an abcess you will need antibiotics and maybe some work doing as it will just keep coming back and in my experience having the tooth out was so much better than dealing with an abcess again and again. I am also scared of the dentist but in the end I had to go and have it done. I was offered sedation but it would of meant another 4mth wait. If you can just go and see. In the mean time take paracetamol and ibruprofen alternativly every 2hrs for the pain.

hope you get it sorted soon xx

Any chance it could be connected to your sinuses? Whenever I get a cold, I get toothache and it's my sinuses playing up.

Hia claire thanx for the speedy response. No no swelling at all round the teeth at the back...just really scared that severe pain will come back it was awful. Really dont know why the pain has more or less gone now Though no that I need to get to a dentist have an appointment in a few weeks will have to try and bring it forward I think.

Hi Littlefish I have just had a really bad cold started last weekend and now just cant stop blowing my nose...I looked sinusitus sp?? on the web and thought it could be that too. However I dont have any of the other symptoms?? would much rather it was that to be honest....then I wouldn't have to face the dentist I am such a coward where dentists are concerned

oh yes my hubby had sinusitus (sp) and he had a very painful jaw, could hardly open his mouth fully, that may also be something. I still think you should try your best to get to the dentist. x

Also the fact that it's in your top set of teeth (if I've got that right) means it's more likely that it's connected to your sinuses. I've had this a couple of times and the first time I went to the dentist and he took an X ray to prove to me that it wasn't the teeth.

Try hanging your head over a bowl of steamy water with a towel over your head and breathing in the steam. You might need antibiotics if it doesn't clear. There is also Sudafed to try (which is for sinus problems) over the counter from the chemist.

How are you? Still no pain I hope?

kirstyg1 · 28/06/2010 21:47

Hia no thankfully no pain at all today....am just hopeful it was my sinuses as had suffered a severe cold in the week leading up to the toothache. Still blowing my nose over a week later constantly. Not sure whether to visit the docs or the dentist??? or just be grateful the pain has gone.

Glad to hear it. If it was me I'd not bother with Dr or Dentist. If it's better, it's better!
