Has anyone had a gingivectomy? (gum removal?) Or any dentists around? Can you come and talk to me please?

I had this procedure last Tues in an attempt to sort out my wisdome tooth which sometimes gets an infection around it. I thought it was going to be really simple, just removing the flap of gum that obscures the tooth partially, but it took about 50 mins to remove all the parts that she felt were contributing to the infections - she said the pockets were very deep

She warned me it would be very painful afterwards, tender, swollen etc. When the anaesthetic wore off it was a bit sore, but the next day it was not very painful at all, and not swollen.

However on the Thurs, it swelled up and started to become very sore, since then it has got more painful every day, and today i feel the ache down in my jaw that i used to get when the infection was present, plus the rank taste and bad breath I used to get with infection. Looking at it, it looks like some of the stitches have come apart It looks odd tbh, I can't work out what's going on

I am due to go back on Tuesday to have stitches removed. I know it might be impossible without looking at it, but has anyone any idea
a) what has gone wrong
b) whether I should do anything before Tuesday
and
c) what they will do to put it right?

it's been several weeks now of pain (i had an infection which was what prompted the gingivectomty) and i am getting fed up of it. I can't eat or sleep properly and don't want to drag the dses to yet another difficult appointment (they sat through the 50 min appointment as i was led to believe it would be fast, and easy )

thanks rabbit, i'll try it

erm, i possibly will have it removed - in fact after this it is looking more likely, i would say
but i am nearly 40 and recovering from a wisdom tooth removal is quite a major thing even when you are young i think
i've got 2 young ones at home, busy life, and it would be a big old deal to have it out - plus there is a possibility of nerve damage as the root is near the nerve

the gingivectomy was a half way house being having it out and doing nothing
i (and the dentist, i think) thought it was going to be quite straightforward, but not so

ah well

well tombliboob i hope your recovery is more straightforward than this appears to be
i may well be back asking for advice on having it out, which i was hoping to avoid...ah well

God kooky this is bad.
however i must point out that letting a puss out does seem extreme

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 13:29

is that you fishy? i can't decipher your post straight away
have you had this done or are you just commiserating?
it could be a lot worse tbh
dp has been fab and taken boys for most of weekend, plus with painkillers it doesn't hurt that much, but eating is a PITA and miserable, plus i just feel aggrieved about it all

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 13:39

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 13:51

i'm alternating ibuprof with paracetamol
it does hurt but i mean not REALLY badly
just enough to annoy me
i have held off on co-codamol so far as am bfing
also in truth it doesn't hurt enough to justify it

But can't you ring your out of hours GP service ,ask for a visit because of suspected infection and need for antiobiotics ?
With luck ,they'll bring antibiotics with them ,not just a prescription . ( have known this )

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 14:00

my GP service would never visit unless your head fell off or something
i'd have to go over to walk in centre, on hottest day of year, and sit with a lot of ill people for an hour before being seen
is about 2 mile walk, and i feel my recovery will be better aided by sitting here with feet up on MN

out of hours service said it's fine to wait till tomorrow and see dentist
i would rather see my dentist than a fed up doctor at walk in centre - i have not got huge amounts of faith in their knowledge anyway - last one i saw told me i should not have brought ds2 in (had been vomiting all day and no wet nappies) and that i should stop giving him breastmilk immediately (he was about 1)

eeeeuuuuuuuw, GROSS

I had a dental abcess once, it felt like something was trying to drill its way out of my jaw

I found alternating co-codamol with double the recommended dose of ibuprofen took the edge off it

also bag of frozen peas over the cheek

poor twistykooks

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 14:05

nah it isn't that bad greeny
it's only a bit of an infection coupled with a mouthful of stitches
ok it does SOUND bad
but honestly i am not brave with pain at all, and it isn't that bad
i'm just fed up because it's been sore for a month now, including infection which i tried to treat myself with rinsing and stuff, as antibiotics seem to have such a crappy effect on me and ds2

violetqueen · 27/06/2010 14:36

wow coupleofkooks ,can quite see why staying at home best option .
sounds like shockingly bad practice !

Ellielou02 · 28/06/2010 13:46

How are you today hope your mouth is ok!

CoupleofKooks · 28/06/2010 18:37

thank you ellie, i saw the dentist and he has removed the stitches put in last week, which has made it all hugely more comfortable on the surface
he says the operation site is fine which is great
however the infection from prior to the operation, has hung around and developed, and has made the back of my mouth swell up in a weird lumpy way
he has given me big antibiotics - which i am now wishing i had just taken a month ago when the infection started, instead of trying to treat it at home
(antibiotics have usually had a rubbish effect on me and ds2 who is breastfed)
would have saved a lot of heartache, still it's easy to say in retrospect

anyway that's it for now hopefully
he says next time it is off to hosp to have it out [fear]

thanks for kind advice

Am glad you are ok, and have been to the dentist, hope the antibiotics go easy on you

CoupleofKooks · 29/06/2010 07:17

it still hurts tbh - he didn't lance the infection, so i guess the pus is all still causing pressure on the nerves and things
i wonder what will happen to it, will it just seep away back into my bloodstream gradually??
sorry that is revolting, but it's that type of thread
