One month of abstinence and fitness - anyone care to join me?

ClaudiaSchiffer · 25/06/2010 23:34

I need to get fitter, stop drinking alcohol, stop eating so much chocolate and other junk. Generally have a good healthy month in order to add zip and zing to my life. I also want to be more creative and less consumed by drudgery.

So . . . during July I am going to do the following . . .

  1. No alcohol
  1. No chocolate/junk food
  1. Exercise at least 3 times a week - for me it will be a 0 - 5k running program.
  1. Pick up my paint brushes and be creative
  1. Listen to more music and DANCE
  1. Say YES to opportunities
  1. Less time on the computer
  1. Read more books
  1. Meditate
  1. Eat and drink healthily

  2. Be conscious of spending money - no quick trips to the newsagents for crappy mags and sweeties

Right. I can't think of any more but would you care to join me?

I want to start properly on July 1st but today I am going for a run and last night I went to a cabaret show which has inspired me to be less conventional and screamingly middle aged and dull.

Perhaps we could encourage each other to to Random Acts of Kindness or get tattoos or learn magic tricks or something.

Hi Wildsheep - good list!

Cake - I've seen someone called cakesandfinewine as well - there were whispers that it might be a more upmarket version of myself but no, it was yet another cake fiend...

Running. Gah! Couldn't run more than a few steps, so back to the drawing board, but I'll tell you this - swimming is NOT WORKING.

FlappingintheBreeze · 01/07/2010 14:21

This is a funny thread!

My list (am copying MostlyLurking and keeping it short) is

  1. No alcohol
  2. Walk every day - even if just 15 minutes.
  3. Laugh more (will read this thread if all else fails - Golden Gaytime has made my day. What will happen if I google it?)
  4. Make time to do something fun each day with dc's (11, 7 and 22 weeks)
  5. Make a little time each evening to speak to dh instead of collapsing in front of tv.

Should be achievable....

Cakesandale · 01/07/2010 14:29

I'm, off to Google Golden Gaytime [hand over eyes}

Cakesandale · 01/07/2010 14:31

Disappointingly tame!

FlappingintheBreeze · 01/07/2010 14:45

Thanks CakesandAle, will try it myself now someone has tested it!

Then off to do the school run - I'm feeling very positive

desiretochange · 01/07/2010 14:57

Day 1 and already I have realised that "need to be organised" should be definitely on my list . . up early this morning to go walking and lo and behold could only find one runner, decided on scrambled eggs and toast for breakfast but not a slice of wholemeal bread to be found.
Have succeeded in upping my intake of water and bought new pair of runners on way back to work (so much for checking impulse buying

Cakesandale · 01/07/2010 14:59

It's all a learning curve, desireto teach. Onwards and upwards.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/07/2010 15:09

Golden Gaytimes are the best ice cream that there is.

ok, end of Day 1 (CBA to go back and check list so here is gixt)

  1. No crisps - check, even though was doing weekly shop while hungry
  2. No sweets - check, and stopped husband buying packet of "amazing tasting biscuits" during weekly shop
  3. No computer after 8.30pm - er, fail (tis 11.30pm, should be in bed)
  4. Menu planned lots of nice low fat healthy things instead of my usual osso bucco and slow cooked lamb shanks. am excited.
  5. I'm sure there was something in there about exercise, probably.
  6. Also hobbies. Have not yet found hobby. Did price paragliding, does that count?
  7. Should have told husband about alcohol resolution. Was grumpy while heating dinner (already past daughter's bedtime, everyone hungry, she's tired, clinging to my legs, etc) and turned around to find he had v considerately made me a G&T with ice and twist of lime. What would you have done? Hmmmm?
tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/07/2010 15:10

GIST

Cake · 01/07/2010 16:58

OK, don't shout at me, but I've already breached No.4 on my list (no fizzy drinks) already

Would you believe it, when I ordered at lunch today, I asked for a coke because that's what I always have in that restaurant. I completely forgot that we were doing this

thatsnotmymonkey · 01/07/2010 20:50

Its only one coke. But NO MORE!

whatname · 01/07/2010 21:01

Ok, can I restart tomorrow?
I don't think I was mentally prepared for this.
food I have done ok, but had 2 coors lights, cos it was so hot,and home alone.and had a diet coke too.
But I did have a job interview!! which went ok!
Jumped on the bandwagon before I was ready, I PROMISE I will do better tomorrow

MarionCole · 01/07/2010 21:24

End of day 1

  1. No sugar - had a chocolate bar after lunch and sticky toffee pudding after tea. Oh, and 3 chocolate limes in the car on the way home.
  2. Start 0-5k running plan again - sat on my arse all evening
  3. Limit sitting on arse in front of TV/laptop to,um, 1 hour per night? - sat on my arse all evening, but to be fair I have been working since I got home, have only just stopped
  4. Read more - mmm
  5. Make a conscious effort to take lunch to work to avoid spending a fortune in the sandwich shop - I did this! Took soup into work.

How did I do?

LittleMarshmallow · 01/07/2010 21:44

Well I managed no wine today and that is where the good ends, I had pizza and chocolate for lunch in my defense I had to finish what was left now I just won't buy anymore. I have managed 3 proper meals so that is good. My writing went ok for about 30 mins till I got distracted so will try again tomorrow

MarionCole · 01/07/2010 22:06

I am so glad I'm not the only crap one!

whatname · 01/07/2010 22:13

Desiretochange and Marion, you made me laugh!!!
Tortoise, pretty good!
Well done to all those who have resisted temptation
cake and monkey, 1 fizzy drink aint bad
Little MM, I agree with using up the old food
let's start again tomorrow!!

Cake · 01/07/2010 23:46

Ooh look at us, so committed

I DID do my 1.5hrs writing though
Made myself write continuously, no breaks
Amazing what I can achieve when not looking on MN every 2 secs

ClaudiaSchiffer · 01/07/2010 23:50

Goood MOOOOOOOOOOORNING People!

It's DAY 2 .

Yesterday after avoiding the Golden Gaytime I left dh watching the footy and went to bed with Zola's, Therese Raquin. A. Proper. Book. Not chicklit. Not a sleb magazine. But a PROPER book - Penguin Classic y'know. I am beyond chuffed with myself as I read it an' everyfink.

Well done everyone on a FANTASTIC start to July. You've all done BRILLIANTLY for the first day, and those of us who haven't done something on our list at least we are more conscious of what we are doing to ourselves and so not just opening our mouths and tipping sweeties and wine in willy nilly. Oh no.

Also you all look lovely this morning. Really cute in fact, that colour nightie/skirt/hair really looks great against your skin.

ninah · 01/07/2010 23:51

I drank some water ...

WildSheepChase · 01/07/2010 23:53

Well, I walked about 3 miles, so yay.

I DID cook from scratch, but dinner involved sweetcorn fritters, so possibly violating Number One aim.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 02/07/2010 00:01

Water is great ninah.

Wildsheepchase 3 miles is excellent. Well done. Sweetcorn fritters sound nice, what's wrong with them? Sweetcorns a vegetable right?

This afternoon if I can bear it. I shall get the paints out and stun the kids with my astonishing artistic ability.

OP posts:
ninah · 02/07/2010 00:03

lol it's pretty poor claudia but it's a start!

ClaudiaSchiffer · 02/07/2010 00:07

Baby steps ninah, baby steps. Sometimes that's what works best

OP posts:
WildSheepChase · 02/07/2010 00:10

Oh! I knitted!

The fritters did contain sweetcorn. And homemade batter. But were fried in vegetable oil, which counts as one of your 5-a-day, right?

ClaudiaSchiffer · 02/07/2010 00:12

Well done wildsheep. That's 2 serves of vegetables in one fine meal.

Oh, and Tortoise, I think I love your dh for making you a g & t at a moment of great stress. What a kind man.
