aarrgghhh - mosquitos!

does anyone know if it's alright for a baby to be under a mosquito net that has been impregnated with repellent - we seem (in London!) to get a lot of the little blighters and I want to get a net to go over DD's cot (she's 6 months), I just looked on the Blacks website and all their nets have chemicals in them.

any help / advise gratefully received - I got my first bite of the season yesterday and it itches like hell!

I don't think they're mosquitos are they? More like gnats. But very nasty all the same - you're luck to only have just had your first bite of the season!

Why not just rig up a net curtain over baby's cot?

NickOfTime · 25/06/2010 22:50

mothercare used to sell them - most baby shops do the cot covers in the travel section.

you can buy those ridiculous buzzy ladybird things as well.

thanks both - I don't know, maybe they are gnats! They look like mozzies and have that hideous high-pitched whine when one flies by your ear. Hadn't thought of a net curtain, that's a good idea. Couldn't find anything on the Mothercare website and the John Lewis one I think (no picture) fits over the cot which I don't really want.

Suittwo..try fresh lemon juice on yr. bite it works like magic!! Also bicarb of soda is amazing if you take it;( quarter tsp.mixed with lemon juice let it bubble and then drink).

They hate geranium oil. I put one drop of geranium essential oil diluted in oilive oil onto dd's skin.

I also have a raid-night and day plug in thingummy. Dd gets bitten to glory, although I don't, this seems to keep them away.

Autan do a lotion which is suitable for babies. It's still chemical, but nothing that's non-chemical is going to zap the buggers.

I got a lot of bites last year but have been drinking bicarb on an empty stomach (see above) and no bites at all this year!!

susitwoshoes · 26/06/2010 19:26

I didn't know that about bicarb, will give it a go as I get bitten to death every year. Do you literally mix quarter teaspoon with neat lemon juice - no water or anything?

Bucharest - thanks for these tips, will try them out, am paranoid DD will get bitten and I know how miserable it makes me, god knows what a baby would be like!

You drink the bicarb and lemon juice (a tablspoon) with a glass of water; it alkilises the body and mossies seem to prefer acid bodies!!
