He's coughing a bit but otherwise seems okay. Should I do something about it? I thought they gave up putting things in their mouth they aren't meant too!?!?!?

A&E. When I took DS recently (for a fall down the stairs..) there was a little girl of about 3 or 4 who'd swallowed a coin, or at least her mum thought she had so was getting it checked out.

throckenholt · 24/06/2010 10:49

mine swallowed a 5 p at about that age. We took him to A&E, they xrayed him to see where it was and make sure it wasn't stuck anywhere.

I think you need to get it checked out because it can cause a blockage.

It reappeared in the nappy the next day (fast metabolism !), but can take up to a month they said. It was no longer very shiny.

Thank you all. I took him to a&e, they x-rayed and all is well. We did manage to eat a picnic there so a little fun was had

DD 4 swallowed a 5p a few months ago. Took her to A&E but they didn't x-ray her as she seemed fine. It appeared about 4 days later, but then she doesn't go for no. 2's every day anyway. I think it's v. important to check that it does come out. Not nice, but good luck!!

Oh I am awful- forgive my dreadful sense of humour, just thinking it puts a new meaning to "spending a penny"..... Sorry! I trust as this post is over a month old that your son has recovered well!

Concordia · 06/08/2010 01:03

I swallowed a penny at age 5 (so over 3o years ago).
i was x rayed and then sent home and my mum had to check my poo for a few days.
pleased all is well now. do you have to keep checking for its return?

Oh dear, now I think I'm a terrible mum. My dd swallowed a dime a few years ago and it never even occurred to me to take her to be xrayed. She was crying hysterically and frantically worried that it was going to do something to her. But luckily, dh had a moment of genius and pretended to find the dime popping out of her bottom. She was so delighted that she had recovered her money that she stopped crying and didn't notice that although she had swallowed a dime, dh had recovered a penny from her bottom. It was particularly funny (perhaps why I didn't think of a&e) because ds was crying hysterically too, and once I had finally calmed him down to find out what was wrong with him....it turned out that his tears were because it was his dime!

when my DS did this we called the dr out- long time back now- and he was very unconcerned and simply said "Wait for the change to come "!

ledodgy · 06/08/2010 10:51

Glad he's ok. Smile

Pity it wasn't a pound though as then the Dr could have told you to come back if there was any change. Grin

Haha crossed posts there purple! Grin
