cystitis - shocking pain, what can i do?

This started yesterday, and the chemist has given me 'Oasis' by Canesten. I have drunk lots of water, and cranberry juice. I have no blood, fever, or tummy ache. but the pain when i wee is shocking, like a contraction! I literally can't breathe.
It's not pain as I start to wee, but the end. But as I have been drinking so much, I have to keep going to the loo! After I feel really heavy - I don't want to stand up!
Now I have a sore throat too!
Is this cystitis do you think - I have never had it before. Can you tell me anything to do to speed up recovery. Thank you

go and see your gp asap. Antibiotics cured me.

SuziKettles · 23/06/2010 20:52

Oh dear it is horrid

I find warm baths help a little and the Oasis/Whatever brand of cystitis powders tend to kick in within 24 hours. Other than that, I don't know if maybe ibuprofen might help as it's anti-inflammatory?

If it doesn't feel better tomorrow (if you've been taking the powders as instructed) then I'd go to the doctor.

Yes see your GP. Although doesn't sound like cystitis - well when I had it, the pain was at the start of weeing. Even a tiny dribble was painful so had to drink loads to make sure I went properly each time!!

Drink gallons of water not cranberry as it is only a preventative and aswell as stopping bugs sticking to the bladder wall it also stops the treatments working. If it is real agone take nurofen and fill up a warm bath and pee in there Have had to do this in the past and it really helped Stick some salt/tea tree in teh bath if you have Huge sympathy xx

Yes sounds like the cystitis I had a few weeks ago. Straight to antibiotics for me, needed to get rid of it asap. Lots of painkillers too, needed it to get some sleep.

Sorry, it's horrid. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks - I have had two sachets, another before bed, and i thought it would be easier by now. It hurts so much it makes me gasp when i wee- is that normal? Is sore throat from too much cranberry do you think, or infected?
Thanks x

Yes, cystitis is one of the most painful things that's ever happened to me. I've had to have antibiotics once when there was blood and pus [vom] but the other times the sachets have got on top of it - within about 4 I would say.

But if your sore throat is worse tomorrow (I can't see how cranberry would cause it) and the cystitis is no better then get thee to the doctor.

I had cystitis recently, and antibiotics shifted it. I was told that cranberry juice was only a preventative. I took the tablet form and started once the ABs ended as I had had GBS infection and thrush infection prior to cystitis and was keen to get the whole horrid business done with!

I felt really rough and terribly exhausted while fighting the infection. I took neurofen and tried to rest when I could. It's hard to describe the pain, but feels like you are weeing razor blades. I know that is not possible, but the only description I can come up with!

Not sure about the sore throat, but you should mention it to your GP. Hope that you get sorted out and are feeling better soon.

Attenborough · 23/06/2010 21:22

I agree - drink all of the water you possibly can, and weak squash is better than nothing if you reach saturation point with water. And go to your GP, they can give you antibiotics which will clear this up quickly. Tell your doctor about the sore throat - it could just be a general low immune system thing.

It's horrible, I know - very painful, exhausting, and when I've had cystitis in the past I've run really high temperatures which make me shivery and feverish.

I hope you feel better soon.

weegiemum · 23/06/2010 21:24

You need antibiotics, and the sooner the better

Personally if it is that bad I'd be onthe phone to NHS 24/Direct (wherever you are) and get started on the ABs tonight - after 24-36 hours the difference is amazing.

Don't take any cranberry while on antibiotics -the cranberry coats your urinary tract and stops the ABs working just like it coats it to stop bugs in the first place.

Any temperature, pain in your side or lower back, then call again or go to A&E as that could be pyelonephritis - Kidney Infection - and needs immediate help. Also if you see any signs of blood in your urine (mine used to be bright pinky-red sometimes!)

Hope you feel better soon!

mooseloose · 23/06/2010 21:51

Thank you all so much. I will take another sachet in a min, one when I wake, and if no better I will get to docs. Info about the cranberry and anti b very useful - I wouldn't have known that.

The cranberry has a dry taste and that was why I wondered about the sore throat!

I also have Episcletitis (6 weeks now), an eye infection which won't go, so maybe I am run down. x

Hope you are feeling better today Moose. Did you get to the docs? It is just misery isn't it?

oldbutgold · 24/06/2010 17:22

I once found a book on cystitis and ways to relieve the pain. I can't remember most of it, but the author recommended keeping a small bottle of water with you and pouring over your vulva after you pee, while you are sitting on the loo. I did this and it does help with preventing reinfection.
Also don't drink gallons of water as this can irritate the urethra even more.
A half teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a small glass of water, several times a day, will help neutralise the urine. I think it's the same ingredient as in chemist remedies.
Once when I was desperate I applied a tiny blob of Anusol (for piles, not mine). It is anaesthetic and helps with the pain.

Hello I have done microgen test which shows up e-coli! Does that confirm it? Thank you!
