Can a bleeding mole mean something else?

I mean something else other than the word 'cancer' that immediately enters your head?

Was in the shower and accidentally scrapped what i thought was a spot.

Though when I tried to look in the mirror I was concerned it might be a mole asked DH to take a look and he said it defiantly looks like a mole though he doesn't remember it being there before. I've no clue if it was there before or if it's a new thing as it's my back and I don't really get to see it that often. (I'm fair skinned and freckly and have a good number of moles)

I am going to got to the GP tomorrow but in the mean time can it mean something else?

Could it literally be that it's bleeding because I scratched it?

yes, I think so. You need to get it checked in case it is malignant, but it might not be! They may want to remove it just to be on the safe side.

Hope you are OK and not too worried

Buddleja · 20/06/2010 21:19

I'm a bit worried but trying to keep a level head about it.

I'm not a sun worshipper either - though can't claim to have be vigulant over the year with my own sun protection

I'd never usually recommend googling your symptoms so I've done it for you It seems like there are pages and pages of people asking the same thing - seems fairly common.
Actually now you remind me, my dad had some moles removed after they changed shape I think, they weren't cancerous but I think it was just a case of better safe than sorry.
Ikwym about the sun. I am not a sun worshipper, but go overboard with hats/cream for the DCs but go about in the sun myself unprotected. I'd never sit in it but hanging wasshing etc...

WellMeantHellBent · 20/06/2010 22:02

Getting it checked is the best thing for you. I have had a mole removed as it went a really dark colour quickly but it was nothing to worry about.

You don't have to be a sun worshipper, if you were badly burnt as a child then you are much more likely to have it in later life. Skin cancer is rife in my family my dad, sis, aunt and uncle have all had malignant melanomas removed so I panicked, but it was fine. If this is the first time you have noticed it then if it is cancer then you will have caught it quickly, and a simple day surgery will have it removed.

WellMeantHellBent · 20/06/2010 22:03

Where is it on your body?

winnybella · 20/06/2010 22:11

Well, if you scrapped it it's only natural it should be bleeding.
Check it out if you're not sure if it's new etc, but perhaps it would be better to see a dermato who will make a map of your moles for future reference since you're pale with lots of moles.I wouldn't necessarily panic about this one, though.

Buddleja · 20/06/2010 22:17

It's on my back (just beneath) shoulder blade.

Hopefully it's just cut - DH telling me he doesn't recall it is a slight concern - though I do have a lot - never hear of a mole map - i'll look into it.

Sadly the other though that passed through my mind when I realised it was a mole was 'how the hell am i going to afford this' I shall be forking out the GP though - not going to ignore it

I've got lots of freckles and moles. I'm very fair skinned and also not sun worshipper but no-one used sun protection when I was young (more the opposite) so I did burn as a child, etc. Anyway, I've occasionally knocked/scratched moles and they do bleed a little. I also get new ones every so often. Got them checked and nothing to worry about.

So, anyway, most probably it's because you scratched it. Hope your visit to GP is reassuring.

secunda · 21/06/2010 00:51

Well I think if you've scraped it it will bleed like any other flesh without necessarily being anything sinister. It's only if it spontaneously bleeds, crusts up, bleeds again that it MAY be something.

violetqueen · 21/06/2010 09:54

Well for what it's worth ,my mother in hosp at present having had hip replacement .
She happened to go in with large blood blister on calf .
This has now reduced in size .
Nurse dressing it says it's just a mole .
They don't seem slightest bit bothered or to be suggesting further investigation .

tutu100 · 21/06/2010 09:56

I had what I thought was a mole which bled after I scratched it. I was really worried and saw GP who sent me to get it checked at hospital. Turns out it is a sebohric keratosis (have spelt that wrong) and nothing to worry about. Just looks a bit horrid.

WellMeantHellBent · 21/06/2010 11:35

How did you get on?

DH is a very moley man and had a good size one on the top of his arm that suddenly started bleeding and went a funny colour.

The GP removed it with a local and sent it off for biopsy - everything came back fine. GP said he had probably caught it on something and irritated it.

As soon as the stiches were removed the incision split open and made a circular scar as he didn't bother getting it restitched and DH now proudly shows off his 'bullet wound' to gullable nieces and nephews.

Buddleja · 21/06/2010 21:25

Alls well

Went to GP and said it was nothing to be worried about (probably what you were talking about tutu100) and it's aggrivated by it's position (bra strap by it etc)

He said he could remove it (just for cosmetic reasons) but becaue of where it is it won't be a neat scar as moving my arm would cause the new wound to open slightly so the scar might be unsightly anyway
