Hi there,

I'm down to have this surgery soon and am trying to weigh up the pros and cons of going ahead, as this will be due to family history rather than an existant problem. Naturally I don't want to reduce my life expectancy either way and am trying to work out what is the best choice. I am a mum and 46. Anyone have experience of this or any views?

My view is if you have a strong history of ovarian cancer and/or genetic disposition I would go ahead without hesitation. Ovarian cancer has a very poor outcome, and no reliable testing. The peace of mind would be priceless and your hormones can be replaced with HRT. Personally, I'd like all my bits removed and I'v no family history - I've seen the dreadful suffering in patients - I think its about the worst death possible.
Good luck

Have you had a 2nd opinion from an expert?

Have you a strong family history?

Your alternative would be to have regular transvaginal scans and CA125 blood tests.

I have a friend whose Mum had OC and she has regular screening. Far as I know, she hasn't been offered the op.
