Egg sized lump on foot

Mr Blinks woke up this am with enormous lump on his foot, just beside his ankle.

no injury, except he walloped it a good few weeks ago... no pain but some pins and needles.

he spoke to doctor who advised leg elevation etc and it's maybe improved a little bit but it's still pretty big.

he's had a dramatic increase in the number of broken veins on both feet recently and has had unexplained bruising under the skin. also an episode of general ankle swelling a few weeks ago that seemed to resolve over a week or so... he was tested for a variety of conditions at the time and they were all negative.

anyone got any idea what might cause this? he's seeing GP in next couple of days.

could it be ganglion?
www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/conditions/ganglion1.shtml
usually on hands but can be feet
dd2 has one (she googled it)

blinks · 20/06/2010 17:40

thanks but i doubt it as it's appeared overnight.

Blinksy I am wondering if there has been some minor damage from the injury, which has resulted in a blood clot somewhere in the area.

I'm not sure about this as the whole thing sounds a bit odd, poor Mr Blinks. I wonder if they tested for this anyway.

Flighttattendant · 20/06/2010 18:44

In fact reading further, I would A&E it if not too tricky.

Can you access an out of hours service this evening?

blinks · 20/06/2010 18:47

yeah, we worried about blood clots but he has no other symptoms and no pain... it IS proper weirdy, what with the broken veins in BOTH feet. they tested for things like lupus/arthritis etc. they were concerned about pulmonary embolism but his breathing is fine and heart appears normal. BP is within normal range.

i'm wondering if an xray might help...

I had a ganglion on my foot, just in front of ankle on top. It appeared overnight. Swelling can cause the pins and needles, and ganglions don't usually hurt (though mine did a bit, and went red - so GP said it might be infected and gave me ABs which seemed to sort it. It lasted a few weeks then gradually went down, though I can still see a slight swelling.

The broken veins are another kettle of fish though, possibly unrelated? Is there any redness, or purply-ness?

blinks · 20/06/2010 19:29

thanks for that elibean.

interesting about your ganglion appearing overnight... it certainly looks like pictures of large ganglions. sounds like it's in the same place too.

the lump is normal skin coloured and the broken veins are purply/blue. some purple blotches around his ankle too.

he has lots of small-ish broken veins all around it now which is new in past few hours. they're reddy/purple.

Blinks, any purpurea needs checking out especially if it is developing that fast.

You need to get him seen tonight, sorry if it's difficult. It's not normal.

Flighttattendant · 20/06/2010 19:36

I can't think how it could be septicaemia without a temp or any pain but there you go, it does definitely need ruling out.

Please let us know how you get on.

blinks · 20/06/2010 19:55

i'll let you know, thanks FA x

it's def not purpura. i'd have him in like a flash if it was.

he's spoken with a GP and nurse today and both said will be fine to leave until tomorrow unless it obviously worsens or he starts feeling unwell/is in pain etc. we'll keep an eye on it overnight and make appt in the am.

was mainly wondering if anyone had experienced anything like this...

Ok, if you are certain there's nothing systemic going on such as fever or pain then I tend to agree,

purpura is just the name for a rash that is characterised by bruising/ broken blood vessels, which is why it doesn't fade.

But it can be caused by all sorts of things, vasculitis, capillaritis etc

I'll be interested to hear the verdict, but in the meantime hope he stays feeling well.

blinks · 23/06/2010 19:18

FA- quick update... it seems most likely it is a hematoma and is a side effect to Venlafaxine, a med he's taken for several years.

he's had more broken veins on his feet for ages but never put 2 and 2 together and it's obviously escalating.

the foot is generally swollen now, rather than a hard lump and there is quite obvious dark bruising all over, down to his toes.

he's now being weaned off the medication so we have our fingers crossed it'll gradually disappear.

scary stuff!
