Seeing a specialist privately

My mum has got a curved spine but her GP won't refer her to a specialist saying there is nothing that can be done

I read specialists can prescribe pain killing drugs that are injected into the spine or special braces that can help with pain relief

Wonder how much a private consultation or two might cost, anyone know?

Before you go down that route you're entitled to seek a second opinion. Another GP may not give her such a gloomy diagnosis. If your mother has private medical insurance she can see a specialist through that. If not, you can track a specialist down through something like www.specialistinfo.com

Check out the local hospitals and find a consultant that you want to see. Ask your GP for a private referral and you'll get an appointment probably within a week - will cost around £150 for the consultation though

that cost won't include any xrays, scans or any other treatment though. if the consultant thinks she needs more treatment ask to be switched to his/her NHS list.

I've just seen a specialist privately and it was £220.

When you say a curved spine, do you mean through osteoporosis, or has she always had a curved spine?
In either case you are entitled t oa referral for a 2nd opinion.
