Ovarian cysts/ endo or cancer?

So I've always wondered if I had endo as I tick all the boxes but the gp's have never seemed interested in referring me as it's just female problems.

Three months ago after a very hectic day of non stop walking I started to get terrible cramping in legs/ groin/ back and pelvis/ ovaries and found I was losing brown discharge, (not old blood), stomach extrememly bloated (feel 8 months pregnant), goggled it (shot me!) and decided it was probably a cyst and hoped it would correct itself so I gave it two periods before going to the gp (everytime I was physically active I 'bleed' ).

GP took a look and said there was some bleeding on my cervix and referred me.

Of course the date they gave me was during my period and they refused to change the date because of the two week target so the hospital could only take a history and take a booking for a scan (internal and external)
which i'm still waiting for 5 weeks and counting since referal.

Now i'm getting leg cramps, which is really worrying because that's exactly how my mums cancer went.

Has anyone had similar with cysts or endo cysts? And why is it that we get urgently referred then have to wait forever for a scan?

I,m surprised that if it is classsed as urgent they couldn't/didn't do a scan whilst you had a period. I would have thought that was possible- it's all a bit messy in there anyway!

( I once had a gynae who was happy to do an internal during a period- he just said go in there, take tampon out and come back to me!)

What kind of cancer did your mum have?

I'd make a fuss and ask for a quicker scan.

Just a word of comfort- ovarina cancer is VERY rare in anyone under 50. TBH your problems sound more hormonal.

Hi Purplepeony, thanks for your words of comfort, after five weeks of worrying i'm at the point now where I really need them.

My mum had ovarian cancer that by the time they diagnosed her had spread to other parts of her body and she actually died within 3 months of diagnosis.

I also thought they would/ could have done an ultrasound at least on the day but they said they would do it at the same time as the lap -(something), I even had to take my own booking form to the outpatient dept!

I can't make a fuss, my gp's are terrible and the hospital (not my local one) that I was sent too is like something from a third world country and I just don't want to jump the queue incase someone else needs that appointment before I do, (if that makes sense, if it's cancer, the symptoms are such that it wouldn't be early stage and there wouldn't be much they could do and if it's a cyst it's not an emergency, whereas someone else may be early stage that could be cured).

they can't just tell from an ultrasound

it is because your womb will look differnt at different time sof the month anyway

have you wanted to pee a lot? or had pains like cycstitus?

Go back and explain thatyou are terrified as your mum had ovarian cancer and you would like some understanding of this silent hard to diagnose disease.

I am sure you will be fine - it is much more coman in post menopausal woman if that helps.

but it is not unwide to check out whats happening with your body.

so sorry to here that ..Sonicxtra ,
what age was your mum .
i have similar fear al moment .

mycatunderstandsme · 18/06/2010 08:11

It could be fibroids-I have just been found to have one. Dr. referred me for a scan thinking I had an ovarian cyst but it was a fibroid. They can cause all those symptoms.I have lots of wierd pain and bloating-have also had shooting pains in tops of legs. Fibroids can press on the nerves to cause the pain.
Try not to worry.

choclab · 18/06/2010 08:35

i am waiting for scan ATM , bloating being my main issue , although i do have IBS ..

what is the difference between fibroid and cyst ?

purplepeony · 18/06/2010 08:57

OP- you are bing ridiculously altruistic in your logic about not wanting to take someone else's place for an urgent scan- your needs are just as great.

You need to go back to your GP or if you can afford it, ask for a private scan which could be as soon as the next day.
I have had an ovarian cyst for 2 years and initially had it scanned every 3-4 months ( privately.) it is/was small and I had no symptoms- was found during a routine gynae MOT.

They can tell a lot from a scan as long as it's an internal one.

Fybroids are uterine muscley growths and I don't think cysts grow in the uterus.

throckenholt · 18/06/2010 09:01

have you told them about your mum ?

It can be hereditary - so they should jump into action quicker.

Hope it is something more benign for you.
