It might be better - it might not be, every time is different - but it won't be anything to do with the homeopathic remedies. Honestly - save your money and buy your baby a lovely present and yoruself an box of chocolates.

DS had the MMR detox just one week ago. He was evil for half a day after (and I mean evil). But he woke up the next day and was a different child.

I actually went to the homeopath for treatment for DS's eczema but once I got talking I realised how much I was worrying about his obsessive behaviour, the depth of his obstinacy, his detachment from things, his inability to look me in the eye, his inability to "play" normally. Homeopath said straight away to give him the MMR detox which I did and I am so glad.

I am not 100% convinced by homeopathy but it did something this time.

Hope this helps.

thanks appledumpling. I went to homeopath for DS's eczema as well. The eczema started about the same time as jabs so we will see if it does anything.........

That is what DS was like. But he was so much better afterwards.

Is it any better now?

turtle23 · 17/06/2010 19:39

He calmed down quite quickly in the afternoon. Repeated the same dose today so we will see if it does anything before we move up to the next three strengths..
Thanks for replying AD.

We found it worst with the first dose.

His eczema got worse too when we gave him the remedy for that - it spread and was very red and sore but that has now calmed down too and he's hardly scratching at all.

Hey, a bit of support never goes amiss .

You've probably heard this before, but there is no significant evidence to suggest that any form of homeopathy is any more effective at treating any illness than a sugar pill (placebo). Homeopathic remedies are heavily diluted to the point where it can be mathematically shown that there is not a single molecule of the 'active' ingredient left in the pill. This means that even if the ingredients used in homeopathic remedies could have a medical effect they are absent from the final treatmet. Homeopathic drugs are exactly the same as a sugar tablet with a drop of water on them. Many homeopaths claim that water has 'memory', however this has never been demonstrated scientifically. In fact if water did have a memory it would mean that the vast majority of our scientific knowledge it wrong.

There are many factors that may make homeopathic remedies 'appear' to work. Firstly you are likley to try a homeopathic remedy when the condition you are trying to treat is at its worst. This means that the condition will get better simply because diseases get better over time. You attribute this improvement to the homeopathy, but it is really down to the condition improving itself.

Secondly homeopathy may appear to work because of the placebo effect. This effect arises when a medicine-free treatment, such as a sugar pill, is given to someone and their condition improves because they believe they have been given a actual medical treatment. This phenomenon is well researched and documented and is the reason why all drug trials test the drug against a placebo, to see if the effect of the drug is above that of the placebo.

There are many other complex factors that give homeopathy the illusion of working. But remember that when homeopathy is tested in a rigorous scientific trial, the same trials used to test all 'conventional' drugs, they show no efficacy beyond the placebo effect.

You may wonder why people are so concerned about homeopathy, when it appears to be harmless. The problem arises when homeopathy is used to "treat" serious conditions for which conventional, effective drugs already exist. There was a case recently of a couple who were jailed when their daughter died from severe eczema. They were found guilty of child abuse because rather than use conventional, effective drugs they used ineffective homoeopathy, and their daughter died. There are many other cases of people dying from treatable illness because they failed to use conventional medicine. This is why the people who produce and sell homeopathic 'remedies', in full knowledge that they don't work, are very dangerous.

If you are interested in learning more about the placebo effect and why homeopathy appears to work I would recommend you read "Bad Science" by Ben Goldacre.

What amcardle said.

Homeopathy is water and sugar pills, and any effect it appears to have is the placebo effect and/or regression to the mean (ie Thing Get Better!).

narmada · 16/08/2010 16:13

second what amcardle said. Don't waste your money on any more homeopathic treatment. It is a total sham.

although this thread was a long time ago, I just want to add that the common error made when rubbishing homeopathy is ignorance of the fact that the remedies are not made by dilution alone, Succussing the remedies at each stage of the dilution process is what creates the energetic imprint of the original substance. Yes, there is no physical trace of the original substance left in a homeopathic remedy, instead what you are left with is a medicine which works at a subtle energy level. Homeopaths don't talk about this much for fear of ridicule but I think they should begin to because what is out there is a lot of misunderstanding. Conventional medicine is definitely worthwhile but homeopathy also has a very useful and real role to play, especially in decreasing our reliance upon anti-biotics. If it were purely a placebo effect, why do some vets also train in and use homeopathy, and why does is work for babies so well? If you want to educate yourself about what homeopathy really is I can recommend 'Vibrational Medicine' by Richard Gerber MD.
