Are you losing any blood? How long have you been having symptoms? Do you feel tired?

I don't know about IBS but I do know that our digestive system is quite complicated!

IMoveTheStars · 15/06/2010 09:22

no blood..
been having symptoms since about Christmas... I think it was triggered by Atkins and most times when I need to go, I neeeed to go. right then. Almost had an embarrasing incident at a garden centre the other day, which is prompting this.

Do I need to go and se the GP? What will they do?

I suffer with IBS and I get this. Go to the GP and they can do a blood and stool test to make sure it's nothing else.

They may suggest an exclusion diet to see if you have an intolerance to something. My IBS started when I was a vegetarian and eating a very high fibre diet. There are a few different pills. Mebeverine is an anti-spasmodic which is supposed to help relax your bowels. The doctor suggested I try seroxat as the IBS is brought on by anxiety, though I wasn't happy about the idea of taking it. There are also herbal remedies like peppermint oil.

Loads of great construct information on IBS, cause. treatments etc here

An exclusion diet is always called for and unless you are veggie then a week or 2 on rice & steamed chicken is the best - No CAFFINE, Artifical Sweetners or Preservatives, Wheat, Dairy or MSG. and then SLOWLY reintroduce after 2 - 4 weeks.

See, I think I have IBS (triggered by massive stress a few months ago) but the GP has referred me to a gastroenterologist at the hospital - that doesn't sound like the normal experience?

WestLondonHypnosis · 15/06/2010 15:39

Hello Again,

IBS is one of those things that you will be diagnosed with when they can't find anything else wrong with you.

Therefore they will send you to see gastroenterologist and even nutrionists before deciding that you have IBS.

IBS is frequently triggered by stress and then it starts a stress spiral and that leaves to body open to all sorts of other things from stomach ulcers to food intolerences to piles.

Even NICE have conceded that if symptoms persist after 12 months then your GP should send you for some psychological support to help you deal with underlying anxiety causes.

And it works really really well....

SpringyWho · 15/06/2010 15:56

Thank you - I'm glad it's normal. Reading a few things on here was beginning to make me think that there might be something scarier going on!
