Could the mirena be masking endometriosis symptoms?

I have had a mirena for nearly 18 months now, bleeding has never really settled down and I bleed at random times and at random heaviness but over a month bleed more days than not. I also have pain after sex but much less period pain, although I do still get it, and far far less mood swings than before. I get an odd pain in what I assume is my uterus as it's in the same place it hurt (a lot!) when it was put in.

So, I've been to a dr, has it checked out and had an ultrasound - all appears to be well. What I'm now wondering is if it's masking the symptoms of endometriosis? I have had endometirosis and an op to remove it before getting pregnant with DS1.

Is that possible? I've had bad period pain today but no period, pain began after sex (on Sun morning!) though.

Any ideas? I've been debating getting the mirena out but it's such a useful form of contraception and in spite of the almost constant and unpredictable bleeding it is lighter and less painful than before, so I'm reluctant to do it!

It could be abating more severe endo since it works by thinning the endometrium.

Mmm, thanks, that's what I thought.

Not quite sure what to do next, not sure I can face a return to full blown endo - I may stick with the coil...

Can you talk it over with a gynae? What other options there might be for you?

GP has suggested taking it out if I want to. I think I'll talk to the family planning Dr's.
Thanks!

Yes definately, although as Im sure you know a lap is the only way to really hae a good look around and diagnose. Painful sex is a very common sympton.

I too have endo but on my ovaries, I also had a lap to explore and treat but it came back. Now seeing a specialist in endo rather than just a general gyno who in the first instance didnt actually remove but gave it a little blast but that's another story!!!

I recently had a 40 min scan both abdominal and internal the sonagrapher (spelling was brilliant and said it was hard to tell what extent it was.

Mirena is a great way of treating the pain that endo can cause, can help reduce the growth aswell. Im trying pain killers each month as this is when my pain comes to the surface - so far so good, however next option would be the mirena.

The current favoured treatment for endo is a Mirena so I would imagine that the endo clinic would not be keen for you to have it removed. Saying that, the amount of bleeding you're getting sounds depressing I'd have a chat to the fpc and see if they have any suggestions.
My sis has used the Mirena for about 2.5 years and has had hardly any endo problems after 20+ years of suffering.
I find the mere thought of having one makes me feel sick and light-headed so have been taking the cp instead. Have been switched to Cezarette today as another experiment option to avoid a further laparoscopy- seems that several organs are tied together with endo which is making life v uncomfortable. Not sure what to do for the best tbh
