I know this sounds shallow, I'm sorry. Does anyone know about weight gain due to medication?

The medication my GP has given me works a treat, I've not felt awake for the past few years so it's a new one. I'm eating the same, exercising the same but am bloated and have put on 1 stone. I've stopped taking the medication now as I don't feel as if I need it, will the weight go by itself or do I need to......diet?

What medication is it? Did you consult your GP before you stopped taking it?

Amatidine, it's unlicensed to help with fatigue associated with MS. I did see her before I started taking it, she just talked about the doses and having to taper it off when I stopped taking it, I never took the full dose anyway as 1 5ml was enough to make me feel normal (it was a very odd feeling after being knackered for years). The information leaflet didn't mention anything about weight gain, constipation and bloating though.

No, can't find anything that would be a direct effect. May be worth getting your thyroid checked anyway, as fatigue, weight gain and constipation are all symptoms of hypothyroidism as well.

I have multiple sclerosis, I've been knackered for just over 3 years. I thought the scales were wrong but the tape measure and the trousers say no I need to go back and see the GP so I'll ask her about it.

Thankyou

I don't know about your specific medication but I have medication which makes me gain weight. I also have a medical condition which makes me gain, for which I'm medicated.

I don't think medication or stopping medication will necessarily in itself make you lose, certainly not in my case. But once you shift the weight you've gained, it may well be easier to keep it off. (I'd suggest exercise and healthy eating rather than actual dieting, because they are easier to make part of your normal way of life)

Just seen clemette's post - I have underactive thyroid, but was putting all my feeling knackered symptoms down to my other condition. So definitely worth getting thyroid checked.

They did check it a few years ago and it was OK. I'll ask her to check it again though.
