They always make me terrible too. I've felt sick all week on erythromicin, I decided this morning I had had enough and didn't take the last one.

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 13:25

glad im not the only one -my stomach making really loud groans - dont want to have chest pain and by the same token dont want the runs either - jesus this is shite

thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 13:25

erythromycin commonly has that effect - if you're feeling really rubbish, phone your GP and ask for a different antibiotic - from another thread a while back, apparently clarithromycin has fewer side effects.

MarionCole · 12/06/2010 13:27

I'm allergic to penicillin so I am always given erythromycin or clarithromycin, both of which are grim. At least it means I only take them when desperate.

ShowOfHands · 12/06/2010 13:29

It's killing off the bacteria in your stomach. The good as well as the bad. Hence the upset stomach. Happens to me every time. Take acidopholus at the same time to replace the good bacteria, also eating lots of live yoghurt can help.

It is grim.

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 13:36

its grim truly- am drinking activia yoghurt drink everyday - ive only taken 3 so far and i feel cack - penicillin has the same effect on me the only one that i can tolerate is the metrondizanole

OP posts:
candyfluff · 12/06/2010 13:36

the name of the one im taking is klaracid

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 14:06

Would the metronidazole work on your chest infection though? Do phone your GP and ask if there is an alternative - or you coudl try eating lots of "binding" foods, like eggs (works for me)

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 14:18

no its more for dental infections-eggs? would they stop the runs?

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 14:20

well they block me up for days so quite possibly. Depends on your own digestive system though. The other thing you can do is to reduce your fat intake to almost none - this was advice given to me after a bout of cryptosporidial "food" poisoning - the GP told me that fat continues to irritate the bowel lining and reduces absorption, allowing the runs to continue - so that's another thing you could try.

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 15:12

im so scared to take the rest of them do you think it will ease up ? - so what sorts of foods should i eat ?

OP posts:
candyfluff · 12/06/2010 15:13

ooooooooooo my chest hurts so much - i took paracetamol but its shite - should of gone for the nurofen

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 15:55

definitely should have gone for the nurofen as it's an anti-inflammatory as well, which paracetamol isn't.

Apart from eggs, I always found that excess wheat fibre bound me up solid as well (but that's because I am wheat intolerant and didn't digest it well --> IBS)

Eat dry toast or ryvitas (disgusting without butter imo but people manage); baked potatoes with no butter (ditto); no milky drinks - it's not pleasant but it shouldn't take long to stop the runs. I'm trying to think of an appropriate protein source with no fat and not managing.

thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 15:55

Got it - mushrooms!

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 16:08

took the paracetamol at half 1 so when can i take the nurofen ?

OP posts:
ILoveGregoryHouse · 12/06/2010 16:16

Yup, take acidophilus. Might need to take for a month after end of anti-biotics. DS2 was on antibiotic prophlyaxis when he was baby and paediatrician told us to give him the acidophilus for the whole time he was on the course of treatment - four months. I swear it really helped him. Theres one that's a powder you can get from Holland & Barrett.

thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 16:16

If it were me, I'd leave it for 4 hours. I seem to remember when DS was on calpol and calprofen alternately after an op, it was a 4hr gap between them. Are you usually ok with nurofen? I'm only asking because of course it has potential gut issues as well...

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 16:19

im fine with nurofen

keep getting waves of pain through my chest - behind my breast which is worse on one side - feeling very sorry for myself

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 17:11

have you got pleurisy? Can you breathe ok? If it gets worse, call your GP or NHS direct or someone - my sister had double pneumonia for days before she did something about it, ended up with mildly scarred lungs.

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 17:15

i can breathe ok as long as i stay still - when i climb the stairs i feel out of breath- gp said chest infection ,she said my blood pressure was raised too- i will call if it gets worse

OP posts:
thumbwitch · 12/06/2010 17:16

hope it doesn't get worse but definitely do call if it does.

I have to go to bed now (am in Oz and it's already well late!) - I hope you feel better soon.

violetqueen · 12/06/2010 17:53

You can take ibroprufen/neurofen and paracetomol - can take together .
They're different drugs ,not like taking a double dose of anything .
Hope you feel better soon .

rockinhippy · 12/06/2010 18:01

Excuse me if repeating, don't have the head to read all replies

but Cats Claw, from your herbalist or health shop will help when taken with Ani b's (not if pregnant though, so check it first @ "drugs.com" for interactions, but its pretty safe with most stuff) ..........afterwards take something like Viridian Synbiotic Flora, to replace the "good bacteria" that the Anti'bs are killing along with the bad...hence why thestomach upset...........no point in taking whilst your on anti b's, as just wasting your money....

Also been a bit careful in eating hard to digest foods, such as diary, wheat & meat....& if its very bad, stick to a roughage free diet for a few days.......white rice cooked with Tumeric (healing spice) worked wonders on my DD recently.........& Ginger is good too......cordial or even Ginger beer

hope it passes soon........I'm prone to infections, & find this lot works well for me

candyfluff · 12/06/2010 19:06

just been to the doctors on call as my breathing got more laboured - he gave me two options to try a steriod or go to the hospital - i chose the steroids - anyone had these-soluable prednisolone he said they would open up my airways helping me to reathe easier - have taken 2 mg in some water,he also gave me codine for the pain
