Oh god have no-one else to discuss this with, but am going for my 1st smear ever today. DP had threatned to leave me if I didn't go, but I am so nervous which is plain silly!

Dont be nervous. It's not painful, you might twinge a bit but thats it.

Just relax and remember that it's a good thing having a smear.

I was so so nervous before my first one, but once you are in there it isn't so bad. I know it sounds silly but just try to relax and when you are in there just keep telling yourself "in five minutes time I will be out of here..." over and over again.

Crap advice really but good luck

I know - when I was preganant with dd2 the doctor gave me a ten minute lecture on how shocked she was I had reached the age of 25 and never had one - ahh well at least for the next one I shall now what to expect! Shall I wear trousers or a skirt?

I would wear a long skirt if you have one. If you wear trousers you'll have to take them off. At least with a skirt you can leave that on and just wip your knickers off.

Thats what I did anyway.

Takes a matter of minutes to go through - and the actual smear taking bit is less than a minute long, honest. You can hold your breath for longer than it takes to do a smear.
Just keep reminding yourself that once it is done, you can relax knowing you won?t need to have it done again for a few years all being well
DP will be so proud of you, perhaps he should treat you to a take out tonight....

throckenholt · 11/08/2005 10:41

I was dreading mine - had been putting it off since January. I had it done last week and it was absolutely fine (much better than previously because they now use small plastic instruments rather than large metal ones).

Skirt is easiest.

basketcase · 11/08/2005 10:41

If you have children, I guess you have had an internal exam? It is quicker and IME less uncomfortable than that - you are going to be fine
Def. wear a skirt - faster and less hassle
