Toddler swallowing very loudly!

Ok. I know. I sound like one of those over sensitive parents that panics when their child has a runny nose.
But my dd, 2.5y has been swallowing really loudly for the past two weeks and I'm wondering if I should be ignoring it or getting it checked out. How much of a loon will the doctor think I am if I take my child in for loud swallows?

It doesn't seem to be when she's eating, just when she is swalloWing saliva. It's very loud and gulpy, kind of like she's swallowing a fizzy drink or something.

Could it be connected to something wrong with her throat....or even her ears?

(I feel like such an idiot writing this post but it has been bothering me!)

If you're concerned then take your child to the doctor and ask them to take a look. Could be that they're teething again... that can create a lot of excess saliva which has to go somewhere. Could be there's some kind of nasal blockage or congestion making swallowing difficult... hay fever time springs to mind. Could be the atmosphere in your home is too dry.

Doctors would always rather you went along and asked than sit at home worried.

Thanks guys, she actually does suffer from hayfever quite badly, and I hadn't considered that they could be related.

Think I will pop her along on Monday just to check it out

gwt them to look at her tonsils.

OhExpletive · 12/06/2010 11:32

Yes, get tonsils checked. Poor DS (3) has had tonsillitis and he was having to make an effort to swallow which was noisy.

My son did this at the same age and I did take him to the GP who thought I was a total loon! He thought it was a bit of an attention thing, and he did grow out of it - pretty much straight after the appointment

Take her though, they don't mind really, and you will only worry.

Well, just incase anyone was wondering....she has apparently developed a habit

Hi All, I am experiencing the same with my 22 months toddler.

How did you get this issue rectified? My little one is doing this for past four days. I fed him spicy food that afternoon. I am not sure if that is the issue or is it just a habit that he developed?

He had reflux symptoms the first six month of his birth to add.

Would appreciate your responses.

Thanks.
