Staph Aureus infection in babies

DS2 has had what I thought was a heat rash under his chin and folds of neck since 6 wks old and behind the ears. at his 8 wk check GP recommended E45 which made things worse and soon his neck became weepy and smelly at night. Another GP diagnosed thrush and prescribed canestan HC 1% which only helped during use. It returned with a vengeance and looked terribly sore. At my husbands request our regular GP took a swab and called us the next day to say that he has to take oral antibiotics as they have found staph aureus infection.

It looks better today as I have put fucidin HC on and he has started his medication. The web searches I have done on skin staph aureus infections are really scarey and imply that babies can die of dehydration and their skin falls off really quickly. I am really horrified to read this stuff and as we can't see GP over the weekend can't get things into perspective. I assumed it was a bit of heat rash that got mucky with sweating. Does anyone have any info or advice on this. Excuse the slightly hysterical tone, not been sleeping well.

clucks, sorry not an expert but strangely I read an article on this in an old magazine at the doctors surgery yesterday! It sounded very sore for the poor mite, but if its any comfort she was fine after a week of antibiotics. The little girl in the article had it literally all over her body and it was so virulent that it was spreading literally as the mother watched (or so they said in the article anyway, it may have been 'sexed up' a bit). Anyway, it disappeared REALLY quickly after they started antibiotics so I should think you are already over the worst. Sympathies and hope things are better soon x E

Clucks - try not to worry. Staph aureus infections need treated by antibiotics and your wee one is now on the correct treatment. Untreated staph aureus infections may result in large areas of a baby's body being infected and hence the reference to fluid loss and skin peeling etc. The web is not always the best thing to search when looking for information relating to your specific personal problem - you read about the totally rare extreme side of things.
You are right that your ds has basically got an infected sweat rash. You will see an improvement really quickly - probably is much better since you posted your message

Yes, it is much better, and he has only had 1 bottle all day, breast the rest. Either no appetite, or too drowsy to notice, or satisfied.. Thanks.
