inverted nipples

Hi, I've posted this in the children health as well, but thaught that some of you might have gone through that here.
My DD has inverted nipples (only 4 months). Is there anything I can do now to help her later? Can it revert on its own when she grows up?
I have succesfully massaged her foot back to the right position, I was wondering if something similar existed for her nipples...
thanks

Leave well alone, perfectly normal and will probably come out more when older. As an adult you can buy something called nipplette to help draw them out and if she becomes a mum she may need to assistance with breastfeeding but apart from that leave it and don't worry about it! I speak as someone born with inverted nips that went flat as adult and have 4 moth old dd with inverted ones.

agree with Thandeka.

If you are worried ask your HV; and presumably you've already seen a physio for your dd's foot?

mamaloco · 09/06/2010 08:10

thanks both, yes I have seens peadiatricians and physios, but her legs was my big concern and her blocked eye duck. I just want to give her the choice to BF later if I can do something about it, I am not worried and know she will be OK.

oh and have to add I am successfully bfeeding my dd with my crap nips. Just needing to use a lasinoh latch assist to draw them out and nipple shields initially to latch her on but it is fine now- (now dd has drawn them out for me!)

belgo · 09/06/2010 08:16

you are thinking very far ahead!

Even if they do remain inverted when/if she becomes a mother, then there are ways of sorting it out then so she can bf if she wishes.

Who knows when our girls are mothers there might be some soopa doopa formula milk invented that is supposedly far better then breastmilk!

I am relieved this is about a child as in an adult it can be a sign of breast cancer. It was the first clue I had that my nana had the disease. I have no idea whether it is a problem in babies so I would suggest you ask the nurse or a doctor at the surgery. I wouldn't have faith in a HV knowing tbh.

belgo · 09/06/2010 08:22

WHy not fab? HV are trained nurses and they work with babies all the time.

Thandeka · 09/06/2010 08:36

Fab- only if the nipple suddenly goes flat- if they have always been flat it isn't a sign.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 09/06/2010 11:15

Belgo - in my experience HV haven't the knowledge needed for out of the ordinary health issues.

Thandeka · 09/06/2010 12:58

but its not that out of the ordinary- flat or inverted nipples are very common.

overlysentimental · 09/06/2010 13:05

I shouldn't worry. I have successfully breastfed two children with inverted nipples.

They have always made me a little self-conscious though so it might be something to keep an eye on and talk to her about when she is a teenager.

On the other hand, it might make her think twice before hopping into bed with all and sundry
