Anyone had a wisdom tooth out under sedation?

Just been for my initial appointment, and the lovely doctor explained that because it's partially through, he couldn't justify the risk of a GA - although if I completely freaked on the day then he would stop the procedure then and there, and reschedule a GA.

I'm a complete and utter wuss at the dentist - but he's assured me that the sedation is fab, and that I'll be fine. Was I taken in completely by his gorgeous smile and lovely bedside manner, or is it really hideous?

Coca · 09/06/2010 14:47

Sedation is wonderful trust me! I am terrified of the dentist and had to have quite a bit of work done. I didn't feel a thing and wasn't aware of anything, it is like being asleep.

glasgowmandy · 09/06/2010 14:50

really?!! i cant sleep thinking about it, someone told me that if you dont seem"scared" they wont give you sedation??x

scurryfunge · 09/06/2010 14:50

I had sedation for wisdom teeth extraction....it is brilliant...no fuss, no pain....just knackered afterwards...make sure you have someone to take you home.

Not sure, I was private so had to pay anyway but it was so worth it. I would still be walking around with a missing front tooth if I hadn't had it done

good good, this is so great hearing all this, easing the nerves a little! my sister had hers out years ago and her face was like she'd been in a few rounds with mike tyson afterwards! ive got my mum coming with me and shes looking after my 8 month old for me for the day, will i be ok after one day? like will i be ok the next day or should i get a babysitter? x

teddymummy · 09/06/2010 14:55

I had it too- you will be completely out of it. My mum had to drive me because you cannot drive afterwards. apparently I was shouting through the whole operation - she even asked to come in and see if I was OK because she could here it from the waiting room! But I was not aware of anything. You will be fine ( and I'm a complete dental wimp too btw!)

scurryfunge · 09/06/2010 14:56

You'll be fine the next day. I came home really hungry afterwards and then zonked out for few hours but felt fine the next day and went back to work.

glasgowmandy · 09/06/2010 14:59

cool, thanks ladies, i had it in my head i was going to be in complete agony, and not able to move or somthing, and in agony for weeks! im so so scared, but hearing that you cant feel anything or know whats going on has helped, is it a needly you get? or gas or somthing? x

I was sedated for root canal surgery and it was absolutely fine. I got a cannula thing in the back of my hand - the nurse injected the stuff, I started to feel a bit drunk, then the next thing I knew the nurse was telling me it was over and I could get up. I have only a few, very vague, memories of the actual procedure. Because you're kind of out of it, there's no pain or discomfort at all while they're working.

I also found it reassuring beforehand, knowing that I was getting sedated and didn't have to worry about putting on a brave face for the dentist. Good luck, you'll be fine

glasgowmandy · 09/06/2010 15:22

thanks chick, feeling much better, i keep saying to myself, ok you had a ceasearian section, you can have a flamin tooth pulled lol x

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 09/06/2010 20:04

Thanks all - I'm feeling more reassured now . I have diazepam for some dental treatment, which doesn't really have any effect, so I'm hoping that the sedation is more effective. The fact that he said they'll simply stop the whole procedure if I really can't cope is also making me feel a whole lot happier.

defo maisie, when are you due in? will you let us know how it goes? my appointment is the 15th, so if i go first ill fill you in lol x

pinkkoala · 10/06/2010 13:16

i am a complete wimp about dentists, i go for check ups but have never had to have any work done, until i had to have a wisdom tooth out a few months ago.

i was told they wouldn't do it unless i was sedated, wish i didn't want.

i took 2 diazepam tablets the night before and 4 the next morning and just had a local injection, i was fine, didn't feel a thing and had no pain afterwards, no swollen face or anything.

i found another dentist to do the procedure as my original one had no experience with nervous patients. The new one we have is lovely, he took my tooth out and would definately reccommend him. he specialises in nervous patients.

i have heard though that being sedated is quite a lot of fun.

Glasgow - I haven't got an appointment yet, but apparently it will be around 12-14 weeks time. Will you please come back and post here, and let me know how you get on?

Hope it goes well for you

Klerka · 11/06/2010 09:00

I had all four out at the same time with local injections. I wasn't offered any sedation but then this was a while ago. And I am no where near brave - I can't stand the dentist either. It was fine... sore obviously as the teeth weren't through and I remember 'feeling' them coming out - but there wasn't much swelling at all, I was quite surprised.

Good luck - you should be fine... just get some nice soup in for dinner.

SwansEatQuince · 11/06/2010 09:09

I had four wisdom teeth extracted whilst 'under' hypnosis and can hand on heart say that I did not feel any pain. The dentist had also backed it up with a local injection.

glasgowmandy · 14/06/2010 08:30

appointment tommorow!!! not gunna sleep tonight! x

SwansEatQuince · 14/06/2010 20:46

Aye you will. You will be just fine, honestly.

Let us know how you get on and good luck!
