I woke up this morning with a bit of toothache in a back top tooth (next to wisdom) Haven't had toothache for about 20 years- visit dentist regularly but have needed no treatment for about 15 years. Although have mouthful of fillings in back teeth.
The pain in the last hour has intensified- have had nurofen, the whole side of my face hurts and my ear.
My gum feels sore- could it be an abcess?
The pain is a constant throbbing- I am close to tears.
Dh hasn't even noticed......

If you can get to a pharmacy, oil of cloves is good at reducing the pain on the tooth.

It goes without saying you need to get to the dentist ASAP.

If you call NHS direct they will sort you out with an appointment for an emergency dentist, your own dentist will see you aswell but you may have to wait until tomorrow now as they will be closed.

ring the dentist and get an emergency appt for the morning

don't put heat on it, if it's an infection it'll draw towards the heat and you don;t want that

sounds like an abscess to me...until you can get to dentist try either...putting a dry green teabag between gum and cheek near affected tooth, or if none of them to hand mix together bicarb of soda and table salt, dampen a cotton wall ball with warm water and then dip in mixture - put this salty side on gum and leave it there. I found this made it a bit more bearable. You have my sympathy - toothache is a nightmare.

Thankyou.
I'm off to the chemist now, and will call my dentist in the morning.
Never had pain like it, and I'm hard- I have no fear of an epilator!
God, what's happening to me- I've got a face full of blobs from the sun and now this.

Yes it defo sounds like an abscess, even though you visit the dentist regularly it may be impossible to see the problem without an xray, maybe a nerve has died and caused infection under a large filling, either way you will probably need antibiotics and painkillers,it will take upto 24-48hrs for the pain to completely go.You need an emergency appointment, ring your practice at opening time, you should get an appointment the same day as a duty of care.If there is what looks like a pimple on the gum above the problematic tooth then you can use warm salt water mouthwashes which will help to drain the puss.1tsp salt tumbler full off warm not hot water,no need to gargle that would be gross.Good luck!

Tablespoon of oil - olive, sunflower, whatever - and swish it round your mouth for 15 minutes.
I know it sounds vile but doing this took away pain so severe that even the strongest painkillers I could get my hands on couldn't take away.

How has your day been, deadei?

deaddei · 09/06/2010 18:16

Just updating here- I felt better on Tuesday but called the dentist and got an appointment this morning. I was bricking it thinking root canal, abcess....but it turns out it's a gum infection. I had a really bad tonsilitis a few weeks ago, and some bacteria have got into a deep gum pocket by a wisdom tooth, and that's what was causing all the pain.
So am on antibiotics and may at some stage have to have wisdom tooth out if it recurs.
But thankyou for all your responses and support-good old MN!!
