long story but had nhs dentist who commenced root canal treatment last nov. because of lack of nhs appointments it is still incomplete, i was told that if i wanted it done sooner i had to pay private(same dentist),I managed to find another nhs dentist and my old dentist took me off books. new dentist now says he wouldnt save tooth and wants to take it out. Do i give in and pay private or have tooth removed. (cant afford private but could prob beg ,borrow etc).what are others experience of dentists,do private patients get better teeth?

OK, the tooth may require root canal due to trauma or decay, either way the tip of the root has an abscess,if it is a larger tooth i.e a molar then there are 3 canals to treat. If the tooth is decayed maybe it is really weak, but after successful root canal treatment to have a crown would be advisable in this case, however if the decay goes below the gum line then this is not really advisable.A Private dentist has more time for treatment and possibly better equipment but this does not mean that an NHS dentist cant do the same job! However due to the new payment scheme for the NHS it is better for the dentist to remove a tooth rather than root treat due to the amount of time required. If you feel the dentist is not doing his job then contact your local PCT.Your dentist maybe advising you on the best treatment,it is not essential to go private....did I mention im a dental nurse!!!

thanks for that, its great to have it explained properly,I will be able to speak to the dentist and will ask him if the decay is below the gum line. If it isnt i will ask him to treat it and take it from there, thanks again.
